Swiss company Synova, which has innovative laser cutting technology, and Japanese company Makino Milling Machine Co., Ltd., known for its high-performance and high-quality precision technology, will jointly announce a groundbreaking manufacturing device for gas turbine components using laser microjet technology. This new manufacturing device not only dramatically reduces the processing time required to drill cooling holes in rotating machinery components but also contributes to the development of excellent cooling technologies aimed at improving gas turbine performance and extending the lifespan of components. This manufacturing technology is planned to be utilized in the production of GE's state-of-the-art gas turbines and, in the future, in the manufacturing of GE aircraft engines. Components installed in the hot gas path of rotating machinery are exposed to temperatures exceeding 1,300°C, requiring special materials with heat-resistant coatings. The new manufacturing device using laser microjet technology can create precise holes in these special materials, enabling accurate cooling effects for each component. The "MCS Series" is a laser processing machine newly developed by Makino Milling Machine Co., Ltd. for LMJ processing. It enables high-precision processing of metals and ceramics, such as cutting, drilling, and grooving, through its high-precision X, Y, Z axes and rotary axis. All controls can be managed from an intuitive touchscreen. The Swiss company Synova, which holds the basic patent for water jet-guided laser (laser microjet technology), has developed the 5-axis machining center 'MCS150'. By passing a water jet with a diameter of less than 100μm, it suppresses heat generation and enables efficient and precise processing while directing high-power lasers onto the material. The "MCS Series" is a high-precision water laser processing machine. It can process holes (0.76mmφ) in superalloy (8mm thick) in 70 seconds. With high machine accuracy (error +/-1.5km), the cutting width is a minimum of 30μm.
