A: Due to the principle of thermocouples, the thermoelectric voltage generated is determined solely by the thermocouple materials used and the temperatures at both ends, and the characteristics do not change based on the diameter or length of the thermocouple wire. Therefore, it does not matter if the measuring part is thin and the middle part is thick, and there are no issues with measurement accuracy even with thin film thermocouples. However, there are constraints on the instrument side that measures the thermoelectric voltage, specifically a limitation on the input resistance to the instrument, which must be within a certain number of ohms. For this reason, in large-scale plants such as power stations, the diameter of the compensation wire is increased to facilitate long-distance transmission. At that time, the thermocouple and compensation wires are connected in a terminal box, often using commercially available standard terminal boards. Compensation wires have thermal electromotive force characteristics almost equivalent to those of thermocouples, but the metal plates used in terminal boards are mostly copper alloys, with both the positive and negative sides being of the same metal type. What is the temperature indication in such cases? A: The connection point between the thermocouple and the compensation wire is often at the terminal box or junction box that comes with the thermocouple, and this connection point is frequently at ambient temperature. Therefore, if the connection from the terminal box to the receiving instrument's terminal is made with the polarity reversed, the temperature difference between the terminal box and the receiving instrument's terminal will affect the error. If there is no temperature difference between the two, there will be no error; however, in summer or winter, the temperature difference can become very large, potentially resulting in an error of over 10°C. A: When simply evaluating the integrity of a thermocouple, it is common to use the presence of continuity and high insulation resistance as benchmarks. For product shipments, the specifications for thermal electromotive force characteristics and insulation resistance are outlined in JIS C1602/1605 as part of the handover inspection. The current JIS has been aligned with IEC standards, so the specified insulation resistance value at the time of shipment is set quite high at 100MΩ / 500VDC. Previously, when Japan had its own unique standards, it was 5MΩ / 500VDC. There is no performance-based rationale for this change; it was simply an alignment of values with the IEC standards, and there is no clear justification for requiring insulation resistance to be this high.
