Free membership registrationIn the field of medical devices, ensuring biological safety with consideration of risk assessment is required, as stipulated in ISO 10993-1. It is necessary to evaluate potential risks, such as toxicity and allergic reactions, to human tissues that come into direct or indirect contact with the medical device. There are various tests, including cytotoxicity tests, irritation tests, sensitization tests, genotoxicity tests, implantation tests, and blood compatibility tests. However, the selection of necessary tests/evaluation items for regulatory compliance must be conducted with consideration of the characteristics of each medical device. ISO 10993-1 categorizes medical devices based on the areas of contact with the human body and the duration of contact, providing endpoints according to the characteristics of the medical device (Table A). However, differences exist among regulatory authorities regarding the recommended testing methods and sample extraction procedures, so it is essential to thoroughly understand these differences. Our company is capable of conducting tests that comply not only with ISO 10993 but also with a wide range of regulations and standards, including FDA guidance, guidelines from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, USP, and OECD. We also provide toxicological risk assessments in addition to testing.

Free membership registrationAs many automotive parts are now electronically controlled, the automotive industry has begun to emphasize the implementation of EMC tests that simulate actual usage environments from the perspective of quality assurance. The UN ECE Regulation has introduced the RVC method, which is closer to real-world conditions compared to the traditional ALSE method (Antenna Coupling Method). To quickly respond to changes in standards, UL Solutions is expanding its Automotive Technology Center and introducing a Reverberation Chamber (RVC). A Reverberation Chamber (RVC) is a shielded room that contains a metal stirrer (mixer). It is primarily composed of equipment that allows for changes in resonant frequencies due to the rotation of the shielded cavity and the electromagnetic wave stirrer. By rotating the electromagnetic wave stirrer in steps, various resonant modes can occur at certain frequencies, enabling the generation of a statistically uniform field within the chamber.

Free membership registrationThe increasing trend in the market for reliability evaluation testing is attributed to the recent advancements in electrification and digitalization, which have led to an increase in components and, consequently, an increase in testing itself. Additionally, the growing adoption of new materials such as resin and composite materials is also a factor contributing to the rise in testing. Among these, automotive electronics components are particularly noted for their increasing demand. These components are exposed to harsh environments, including temperature and humidity changes, vibrations, heat, water, and dust, necessitating testing under various conditions to ensure proper functionality. The adoption of new components leads to a greater number of parts, which in turn increases the testing requirements. Furthermore, for automotive manufacturers, component manufacturers, and material manufacturers conducting tests, the investment costs associated with maintaining the latest testing equipment in-house to accommodate the increasing number of components and new materials can be a significant burden. As a result, there has been a rise in cases where reliability evaluation testing is outsourced to external laboratories. In light of this situation, our company is enhancing and expanding our specialized and advanced testing facilities to meet the new testing demands.

On the other hand, for consumers, the incorporation of lasers and LEDs into more familiar products has made safety assurance an important factor in product selection. In this era, UL's Verified Mark is the optimal program to appeal to buyers regarding the safety of laser/LED light emission levels in products. Why is verification necessary? The UL Verified Mark program for laser/LED products is a third-party verification service aimed at verifying the emission levels of lasers/LEDs at reliable testing laboratories and utilizing the results in your marketing activities. By using it alongside UL's well-recognized safety evaluation services in the United States, it alleviates concerns for users and retailers while promoting brand transparency in the market. Products that measure laser/LED emission levels are categorized into three groups under this unique UL program.

Free membership registrationThere is an increasing number of cases where common technologies are used in IT equipment and AV equipment. As a result, products that can be classified as either IT equipment or AV equipment are on the rise, and the significance of categorizing these products into one of the two categories is diminishing. The safety of these products is being addressed through the introduction of 62368-1, which adopts a new approach called Hazard-Based Safety Engineering (HBSE), focusing on energy sources rather than relying on traditional testing regulations and design (structural) regulations. 62368-1 is a new international standard developed with the aim of consolidating the target products of the IT equipment standard IEC 60950-1 and the AV equipment standard IEC 60065 into a single standard. The target products encompass a wide range, including computer and network equipment, home appliances, display and display units, communication products, office equipment, musical instruments, and other similar audio/video equipment and information/communication technology devices.
