The CryoPlus series provides safe storage through the combination of reliable liquid nitrogen preservation and microprocessor technology.

Ion chromatography: Measurement of trace ions in high-concentration basic samples.

Measurement of trace anions using inline neutralization processing

The analytical methods for high-concentration sodium hydroxide (NaOH) are specified in JIS K1200 Industrial Sodium Hydroxide Parts 1 to 10. Among these, the methods for measuring chlorides include the mercuric thiocyanate spectrophotometric method, the modified Holthart method, and the ion chromatography analysis method. The mercuric thiocyanate spectrophotometric method is often avoided due to the strict handling and management of mercury compounds. The modified Holthart method quantifies chlorides by adding an excess of silver nitrate solution and performing back titration with ammonium thiocyanate solution, but it is not suitable for quantifying low-concentration chlorides in samples. The ion chromatography analysis method involves complex pretreatment operations and carries the risk of sample contamination; however, this application note introduces a method that automates the pretreatment step using cation exchange resin inline. This automated pretreatment is a technique for inline neutralization using our suppressor technology. It can accommodate not only NaOH but also many high-concentration basic samples, allowing for the analysis of anionic components in the samples.

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is an organic compound represented by the chemical formula (CH3)2NNO. NDMA is a known carcinogen found in some fermented foods. The measurement of nitrite ions can be performed using wet chemical analysis, but a representative method in instrumental analysis is ion chromatography (IC). In IC, separation is achieved using an ion exchange column, and detection is carried out using conductivity detection, electrochemical detection, UV detection, or mass spectrometry. Methods using IC typically require little to no sample pretreatment for many pharmaceutical samples, and derivatization of the target components is also unnecessary.

[Case Study] Residual Solvent Analysis in Food Packaging Using Headspace GC

Analysis of residual solvents in food packaging by headspace GC-FID/MS according to European standard EN 13628-1 method.

The chemical components of food packaging (especially those derived from polymers, dyes, and inks) can pose health risks to consumers by migrating into food. In the United States, the migration limit applicable to residual solvents and non-volatile food additives is 50 ppm. Additionally, the accurate quantification of residual solvents in flexible packaging is regulated by established methods such as EN 13628-1:2002. When analyzing volatile impurities in solid polymers using liquid injection, a cumbersome process of dissolving the sample in an appropriate solvent is required. Furthermore, high-viscosity solutions containing non-volatile long-chain polymers can contaminate the GC injector port, leading to increased analysis costs due to frequent maintenance. On the other hand, using headspace sampling allows for the rapid and easy extraction of volatile components from food packaging samples, eliminating the need for time-consuming sample preparation. This technical document presents the quantitative results of residual solvent analysis in food packaging materials conducted using the TriPlus 500 headspace (HS) autosampler. The dual detector configuration of FID/MS enabled the detection, identification (using hydrogen flame ionization detection), and confirmation (using mass spectrometry detection) of unknown impurities.

Organic solvents are widely used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, but they cannot always be completely removed during the manufacturing process. To ensure safety, the final product is tested to evaluate whether the solvents used have been efficiently removed and, if any remain, whether their concentrations are within acceptable limits. The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) method <467> provides detailed procedures for screening, confirming, and quantifying residual solvents, including sample preparation and analytical conditions. The new TriPlus 500 HS autosampler adopts an innovative design with a flow path that directly connects the heated valve to the GC column. This means high-precision sample introduction and excellent reproducibility of peak areas. Furthermore, by continuously purging the sample path, the robustness and reliability of the system are ensured, reducing the risk of contamination and carryover (which is important when analyzing high-boiling residual solvents). This technical document reports the results of residual solvent analysis conducted in accordance with USP <467>, using the TriPlus 500 HS autosampler and FID as the optimal detector.

This is because they can separate trace amounts of pesticides from the food matrix and detect peaks with high sensitivity. On the other hand, our Orbitrap mass spectrometer allows for advanced mass separation, enabling the detection of pesticide peaks without interference from the food-derived matrix. This application note introduces a simultaneous analysis of 325 pesticide components using a GC-Orbitrap mass spectrometer. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are components generated from the heating of organic materials, and due to concerns about their carcinogenicity and other health effects, PAHs present in food are regulated in some countries and regions. In particular, edible oils may undergo heating as a pretreatment during extraction from raw materials, which raises the possibility that PAHs could be generated during the thermal processing, even if the raw materials themselves do not contain PAHs. Since various countries have established standard values for PAHs, safety inspections may be required when exporting food abroad. These standard values are becoming stricter year by year, and high-sensitivity detection measurement devices are needed to accurately quantify these standard values. This application note presents a case of highly sensitive quantification of PAHs without interference from matrix components, achieved using the high mass resolution and mass accuracy of the Orbitrap GC-M system, a high-resolution GCMS. Data acquisition is performed through full scan measurements, making method development easier and enabling retrospective analysis (such as checking whether newly regulated components were present in previously measured samples).

The processed foods we consume develop unique flavors and aromas due to various differences in the quantities and origins of the ingredients used, as well as cooking times, even if they share the same name. Understanding these differences at the component level is crucial in food research, and the use of GC/MS methods is expected to shed light on volatile components, which are believed to be factors influencing aroma. Non-target analysis that encompasses all contained components has been considered challenging due to the vast amount of information and the complexity of analytical operations. To obtain reliable results, efficient sampling methods, chromatographic separation, advanced mass separation, and software for smooth statistical analysis of the data are required. In this technical document, we present a workflow using high-resolution GC-MS (Orbitrap GC-MS) and Compound Discoverer software for low molecular analysis, as a solution to smoothly and accurately address this complex food comparison, exemplified by the inter-sample comparison of commercially available meat sauces from three food manufacturers.

PFAS compounds include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), and due to the increasing number of organic fluorine compounds that impact the environment and precursors that cannot yet be analyzed, there is a demand for the development of suitable analytical methods. As a result, there is a growing need for a single analytical workflow that can directly quantify as many PFAS as possible. Traditional ion chromatography (IC) cannot directly analyze non-ionic perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). However, using continuous ion chromatography (CIC), it is possible to measure organic halogen contaminants such as AOX. Unlike the conventional titration AOX method, which only measures the total organic halogens, CIC provides additional information on adsorptive organic fluorine compounds and allows for the speciation of halogens. *Please note that the ion chromatograph introduced in this application note has been discontinued. Do glass vials affect the pH of valuable samples? The answer is simple: "Yes."

pH has a significant impact on the ionization state of specific analytes. For example, a base with a pKa of 8.5 is 99% ionized at pH 6.5 using the 2 pH unit rule and 99% non-ionized at pH 10.5. When the analyte is close to its own pKa, unstable chromatograms may be observed, so it is necessary to adjust the pH to achieve the appropriate ionization state. Differences in the surface activity of vial glass and the leaching of hydrolysis products that affect the sample pH can be confirmed by monitoring the pH changes of deionized water stored in the vial. To investigate how the quality of glass, represented by the expansion coefficient, affects the pH of the solution, we measured the fluctuations in the pH of 18 MΩ pure water stored in an autosampler vial for a certain period at room temperature and compared the results with those obtained using polypropylene containers as a control.
