As a result, an oxide film called the α-case is formed from the surface of the casting to the interior, approximately 0.5mm thick. This oxide film is very hard yet brittle, and a round rod of Φ1mm can break just by bending it by hand. If it does not break even when bent over 90 degrees, it can be judged as a good titanium casting with a thin oxide film.
