In the case of hardfacing, if the weld is allowed to cool naturally without any slow cooling after completion, there have been instances where the hardfaced area cracked the next day. This cracking often occurs perpendicular to the direction of the hardfacing weld and is referred to as delayed cracking. The effect of post-heating is to release hydrogen by heating the weld area immediately after completion, thereby preventing delayed cracking. To prevent delayed cracking with just preheating, high-temperature preheating is necessary, which can be difficult depending on the mass of the item.
