How do plants grow in a space environment? If plants can be cultivated in space just like on Earth, it would greatly contribute to solving global environmental issues. MRT has developed an experimental unit that can recreate conditions almost identical to those in space, building on the know-how cultivated in the field of industrial measuring instruments, and has participated in JAXA's onboard plant research. ● Experimental Method Seedlings of rice and tomatoes are placed in MRT's tabletop plant factory and taken on a plane, where rapid ascents and descents create a near-weightless state to investigate the effects on the seedlings. The experimental unit allows for detailed verification of how factors like gravity and light affect leaf surface temperature, the optimal temperature range for photosynthesis, and how water is absorbed in a microgravity environment. Opportunities to actually fly into space are very precious. It is crucial to repeat such foundational experiments on the ground to ensure reliable results when conducting experiments in space. MRT's technology is recognized in the cutting-edge field of space development for balancing "advanced experimental performance" with "easily reproducible experimental procedures" for astronauts.
