Tohoku University Technology: Method for Detecting Plastic Strain in Stainless Steel: T08-213

Detection of minute plastic strain is possible through electrochemical treatment using nitric acid.

Until now, methods using magnetic, ultrasonic, X-ray, hardness, and other techniques have been known for detecting plastic strain. However, from the perspective of accuracy and quantitativeness, not all methods are established techniques. On the other hand, for the aging degradation of metallic materials, there is an electrochemical method (anodic characteristics/electrochemical etching) with a clear principle for damage measurement. When a material is etched, if there is a disturbance in the atomic arrangement at the grain boundaries or if there are precipitates or impurities, those areas will selectively dissolve. In this invention, we discovered conditions under which twin regions preferentially dissolve through nitric acid etching in stainless steel, and developed a method to evaluate the amount of plastic strain based on the density of etching marks.

Detect more information from captured image with accuracy while avoiding the increase of marker number

Currently, research and development are being conducted on information processing device that reads information indicated by markers on the image taken by a moving object such as robot, and that controls the moving object. More the complexity of mobile object movement increases, more the information quantity to be read from the markers becomes important. When there are huge information, the information of each marker is read by the information processing device, but the marker number increases as the information increases. As a result, the information processing device is unable to operate the moving object with accuracy.   This invention is able to provide marker, information processing device and program that can accurately detect more information from the captured images in which markers are captured, while avoiding the increase of marker number. This invention has 1st marker indicating the 1st information and 2nd marker indicating the 2nd information that are superimposed on the marker, which reflect electromagnetic wave of each wavelength band and indicate the information by different encoding. This allows more information to be detected with accuracy from the captured image, while avoiding the increase of marker number.

Fast timing signal acquisition is possible with low bias voltage.

The present invention relates to a radiation detection method and radiation detection device, as well as a positron emission tomography (PET) device equipped with the radiation detection device. Regarding the background of PET, high-performance types of detectors use radiation detectors made of CdTe crystals; however, they have issues such as being covalent crystals with a high melting point and high manufacturing costs. For example, the price of the crystal alone for one device can be several hundred million yen, making it expensive. Therefore, thallium halides such as TlBr, which are inexpensive, have garnered attention as alternative materials to CdTe. While thallium bromide radiation detectors have a very high detection efficiency for gamma rays, their coincidence timing resolution has been poor, and they have not been utilized until now. According to the present invention, a radiation detection device using a thallium bromide radiation detector with practical coincidence timing resolution is provided, as well as a positron emission tomography device equipped with the radiation detection device.
