[Case Study] Improvement of Cold and Heat Repetition Resistance of Resin-Plated Products with a Bias Toward Meat

Due to having a consistent production system (molds, molding, plating processing), it is possible to consider and implement total solutions.

We would like to introduce a case where we solved the issue by improving the cold and heat cycle resistance of thick-walled resin plating products. The problem was that decorative chrome plating was applied to PC+ABS, but the coefficients of thermal expansion of the metals that make up the decorative chrome plating—copper, nickel, and chromium—are significantly smaller compared to PC+ABS. As a result, the plating film could not withstand the stress when temperature was applied, leading to the occurrence of cracks. We proposed improving the shape of the stress concentration points. As a result, the cold and heat cycle resistance was enhanced, allowing us to mass-produce and deliver high-quality products, thereby ensuring safety in the market and gaining trust from our customers. At that time, European flagship cars were beginning to adopt a beautiful appearance resembling machined aluminum, and we would like to introduce a case where this issue was resolved with resin plating. At that time, there were only completely matte platings available in Japan that did not reflect images, and there was no company with a proven track record of mass production using those chemicals. Therefore, at our new process development department, we were researching this chemical and developing a unique plating expression by combining it with other processes. We proposed a plating color with a distinctive aluminum appearance. A resin-plated product with a unique luster specific to the manufacturer was adopted, contributing to the enhancement of the interior quality of the automobile.
