[Case Study] Processing (Cleaning) of Ion Exchange Resins to Meet Customer Quality Requirements

We will introduce a case where two issues, the establishment of a cleaning method and the implementation of cleaning work, were resolved!

There is an ion exchange resin used for analytical purposes, but issues have arisen due to trace contaminants (such as residues from surfactants) on the surface of the ion exchange resin. Additionally, the manufacturer has indicated that further cleaning beyond what has already been done is difficult, and we have been exploring cleaning methods to meet the customer's specific quality requirements. Since the customer's quality evaluation test methods were not disclosed, we created several cleaning samples by adjusting the chemicals and process times used for cleaning. After evaluating multiple samples, we established a cleaning method that meets the required quality. 【Case Overview】 ■ Industry: Analytical Testing ■ Key Technology: Cleaning of Ion Exchange Resin ■ Challenge: Resolving issues caused by surface contaminants on ion exchange resin used for analytical purposes *For more details, please refer to the related links or feel free to contact us.

[Technical Column] Particle Size Distribution and Hydraulic Characteristics of Ion Exchange Resins

I will explain topics such as "differences in characteristics due to particle size distribution" and "backwashing expansion and separation characteristics"!

Ion exchange resins are spherical substances with a diameter of approximately 0.3 to 1.2 mm, and there are ion exchange resins with a wide range of particle size distributions known as "Gaussian distribution" and those with a nearly uniform particle size distribution called "uniform particle size distribution." These are used differently depending on their applications, but ion exchange resins with a uniform particle size distribution often have advantageous characteristics. In this column, we explain topics such as "differences in particle size distribution due to manufacturing methods" and "differential pressure characteristics (pressure loss)." [Overview] ■ Differences in particle size distribution due to manufacturing methods ■ Differences in characteristics based on particle size distribution ■ Differential pressure characteristics (pressure loss) ■ Backwashing expansion and separation characteristics ■ Swelling ratio *For detailed content of the column, please refer to the related links. For more information, feel free to contact us.

[Technical Column] Reaction Rate of Ion Exchange Resins

In methods for evaluating reaction rates, it is necessary to conduct tests under controlled conditions!

As an evaluation item for the performance of ion exchange resins, an important physical property alongside "ion exchange capacity" is "reaction rate." Generally, those with a large ion exchange capacity have a low reaction rate, while those with a small ion exchange capacity have a high reaction rate. Therefore, the priority of either characteristic depends on the application conditions. In this column, we introduce an example where a water solution is prepared in a beaker and ion exchange resin is added. *For detailed content of the column, please refer to the related links. For more information, feel free to contact us.*

[Technical Column] Selectivity of Ion Exchange Resins

It is necessary to select appropriately based on the properties of the solution, such as the pH of the aqueous solution and the type of metal ions to be removed!

There are various types of ion exchange resins, and to select the appropriate type, it is necessary to recognize their characteristics. One particularly important characteristic is called "selectivity," which can be described as the "preferences of the ions" for the ion exchange resin. Additionally, the ease of adsorption varies depending on the type of ion exchange resin and the type of ions it reacts with, with characteristics such as "ions with higher valence are easier to adsorb" and "for elements in the same group, ions with a larger atomic number are easier to adsorb." In this column, we will provide a detailed explanation with reference to the periodic table and the selectivity coefficients of cation exchange resins and anion exchange resins. *For more detailed content of the column, please refer to the related links.
