・ Safe, Low-Temp, and Impurity-Free Sulfurization Technology ・ Innovative n-Type SnS Thin Films for Next-Gen Solar Cells

Thin-film solar cells using SnS (tin sulfide) offer the following advantages: ・Free of toxic elements such as Cd and Te. ・Composed of abundant and inexpensive elements (Sn and S). ・Efficient light absorption at a thickness of just 2–3 μm (compared to ~500 μm for silicon). ・A conversion efficiency of 25.3% has been reported for homo p-n junctions. However, achieving high-efficiency SnS solar cells with a homo p-n junction requires n-type SnS thin films, which have been technically challenging to fabricate. In this invention, inventor successfully synthesized n-type SnS thin films for the first time using a novel sulfurization technique based on sulfur plasma. This breakthrough is expected to enable the realization of homojunction SnS solar cells in the future.

High-efficiency solar cells made from environmentally friendly nitride semiconductors.

The nitride semiconductor InGaAlN can almost cover the entire solar spectrum, and its constituent elements are also environmentally friendly. Unlike conventional semiconductors, nitride semiconductors do not have lattice-matched substrates, resulting in many defects within the crystal. In solar cells, it is necessary to efficiently extract photo carriers. As a strategy, a device structure that utilizes the spontaneously generated polarization electric field within the crystal has been proposed. To realize this structure, it is essential to have growth technology that controls the polarity of the crystal (the arrangement order of constituent atoms along the thin film crystal growth direction), particularly nitrogen (N) polarity growth technology. Tohoku University has successfully achieved this N-polar growth earlier than anyone else in the world and has fabricated N-polar solar cells. Experimental verification has shown that the extraction efficiency of photo carriers is more than eight times greater compared to Ga-polar solar cells.

By analyzing nano and micro scale flow phenomena and clarifying the correlation between the structural characteristics and the transport mechanism of each component, PEFC performance is expected to be improved. 【Secondary battery】 Due to increasing energy demand and environmental problems, secondary batteries that can be charged and discharged without emitting CO2 or nitrogen oxides are attracting attention. We have a track record of analyzing nano and micro scale flow phenomena such as ion flow in the electrolyte inside liquid and all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. 【Semiconductor】 For advanced semiconductor devices, controls on the atomic layer level with a thickness error of ±0.5 Å on the wafer is required for the deposition process. In the past, it was necessary to optimize a large amount of experimental data in order to form a precise thin film. At Tokumasu Laboratory, we will elucidate the mechanism through numerical simulation and search for the optimum deposition mechanism.

Battery sheet capable of long-term storage

Metal-air batteries composed of a metal electrode (negative electrode), an electrolyte, and an air electrode(positive electrode) have the advantage of being lighter than other batteries and have been used practically as power sources for hearing aids. On the other hand, the degradation of the metal electrode caused by contact with the electrolyte and the low voltage compared with other batteries have been pointed out as problems.The present invention relates to a new form of metal-air battery which solves the above problems. The present battery is a "foldable metal-air battery" in which a plurality of metal electrodes, electrolytes, and air electrodes are arranged on a sheet, and a plurality of laminates of metal electrodes/electrolytes/air lectrodes are formed by folding the sheet. Since the sheet is folded to function as a battery, the electrolyte and metal electrodes do not come into contact with each other when not in use, and deterioration can be prevented. The figure on the right shows the measured voltage when the number of cells in the laminate is increased. By stacking multiple cells as in origami, the problem of low voltage of metal-air batteries can also be solved. Since this battery solves the conventional problem and has a new foldable type, it is expected to be put into practical use in the following applications.

Redox flow battery with low cost, high electromotive force and current density

 The amount of electricity generated by renewable energy varies a lot on climate, etc. Therefore, it is preferable to use it in combination with storage battery in order to supply stable electric power. Redox flow battery (RFB), which charges and discharges by ion redox reaction, is highly valued for its safety due to its nonflammability, its high durability as the electrolyte & electrode hardly deteriorate, and its low running cost. Vanadium RFB is in practical use but in recent years, the resource price of vanadium active material has jumped, resulting in high initial cost.  This invention uses only titanium as active material for both cathode / anode chambers, which significantly reduces the initial cost. There is existing RFB technology that combines titanium and manganese, but using different elements in the cathode / anode chambers risks contamination due to its principle, so a premature battery degradation could be expected. This invention has an advantage in this field and it is also expected to realize more efficient RFB because of its higher electromotive force and current density that can be extracted compared to conventional vanadium ion RFB.
