[Case Study] Proposal for a prism that maintains high reflectivity even when dirt adheres.

Achieve nanometer-level precision in optical components! Realize high reflectivity unaffected by surface conditions!

We received a request from a semiconductor manufacturer to analyze samples of prisms used in integrated circuit manufacturing equipment sensors. Upon conducting an analysis with our own application of grease (contamination), we discovered that the contamination disrupted the total reflection conditions, resulting in a loss of light intensity. In the event that contamination occurs, it could lead to a decrease in detection accuracy and potentially cause process defects, making prompt improvements essential. Therefore, we proposed a prism equipped with a high-reflective mirror that maintains high reflectivity even if contamination occurs, referred to as the "Prism with Induced Multi-Layer Film Mirror." We received high praise from the semiconductor manufacturer, and it was adopted immediately. New inductor element using spintronics technology

An inductor is known as an element that uses the induced electromotive force generated in a coil to stabilize the current in circuits. Circuit elements used in small electronic devices require miniaturization, but there is a fundamental limit for conventional inductors due to a physical restriction. This invention uses the principle of induction in spintronics physics, as the inventors have shown, that inductance emerges in uniform magnetic materials as a result of spin-orbit interaction, where any “twists” are not required like conventional coils or magnetic structures. This technology offers various inductor elements that are low-cost, stable against temperature variation, and capable of miniaturizing.

Innovative technology possible to apply in a wide application by using spintronics

There are various schemes to electrically control magnetic materials. Several functional elements such as random number generation, oscillator, wave detection and memory based on the previously discovered phenomena have been proposed so far. However, elements that use ferromagnetic material is sensitive to magnetic field noise caused by external magnetic field, needs magnetic field control by an external mechanism to control oscillator and wave detector frequency, and requires miniaturization.   This technology solves the above issues based on the new phenomenon, so called continuous rotation of chiral spin structure in non-collinear antiferromagnetic materials, and provides ultra compact, low power consumption and highly stable elements.

Tohoku University Technology: MTJ device using FeSiAl alloy: T20-1263

High TMR, high sensor sensitivity and cost reduction can be realized using FeSiAl alloy. Low HK can be obtained for FeSiAl films with wide composition range.

TMR sensor is known to be a high sensitivity magnetic sensor which uses the tunnel magnetoresistance effect (TMR) in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). The TMR sensor performance can be controlled by controlling the magnetic anisotropy (HK) of the free layer. Therefore, it is expected to be applied to the bio-magnetic measurement device that detects the weak magnetic field of a living body at room temperature, the battery level detector for electric vehicle, non-destructive inspection to detect the rupture or deterioration of reinforcing steel bar in concrete structure, etc.    NiFe alloy, CoFeB alloy and CoFeSiB alloys have been conventionally developed as free layer of MTJ devices for TMR sensor, but higher sensitivity and lower cost are required.  This invention focused on FeSiAl alloy (Sendust) to produce the Sendust thin film of nanometer order thickness which was not able to fabricate. Therefore, this alloy is applied to the free layer to fabricate the MTJ devices that achieve the same level of sensor sensitivity as NiFe alloy, etc. It has been also revealed that the soft magnetic property is excellent over a wider range of composition compared with conventional Sendust.

Comparable computing ability with quantum annealing at room temperature

Quantum annealing has been intensively investigated recent years. However, it requires a superconductivity condition (at extreme low temperature), and complicate system like quantum bit connection. Meanwhile, magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), a solid-state component gives probability output in MRAM, has been noticed among those research. This invention applies MTJ’s property and successfully provides a probability information processing computer system, which is comparable with quantum annealing’s computing ability but much simpler to use.

Realizing wide viewing-zone angles For electronic-holography 3D displays

・ Electronic holography for displaying three-dimensional (3D) information is required for entertainment, industrial design, measurement, and head-up display for automobiles. ・3D information is displayed by reconstructing an image through a spatial light modulator(SLM). SLM cannot narrow the pixel pitchbecause the electric field leaks out to adjacent pixels, resulting in a narrow viewing-zone angles. ・Therefore, the invention introduces a liquid crystal driving system in a lateral electric field by a continuous potential difference and fine ground electrodes into the SLM. ・As a result, the electric field leakage is reduced, the pixel pitch of less than 1 μm is achieved for the first time. ・Using the pixel pitch of 1μm, it is possible to achieve practical viewing-zone angels of 30°. invention is expected to enlarge electronic holography application field.

Composite elements are structures in which grooves are processed into ceramics and resin is filled into those grooves. In conventional piezoelectric elements, when ultrasonic waves are emitted from objects with different sound speeds, such as air to water or biological tissues, the ultrasonic waves are hindered by the wall of acoustic impedance (= density * sound speed), making efficient emission difficult. Composite elements can reduce density by decreasing the volume of the piezoelectric element, which in turn can lower the acoustic impedance. A prism is a wedge-shaped optical element made of a plane that forms an angle with the incident and exit surfaces of light. It is used to change the direction of light passing through by utilizing refraction (deflection), to change the direction of light of different wavelengths by utilizing dispersion (spectroscopy), or to align the direction of light (coherence). The prism in the photo is designed so that the incident light undergoes total internal reflection at a surface tilted at 45 degrees, changing its direction by 90 degrees, and the lens surface formed at the prism's exit surface alters the way the light spreads.
