The purified water and sludge are separated in the final settling tank, and a portion of the separated biomass is returned to the aeration tank. The remainder is sent to the sludge treatment process, while the purified water overflows the weir and enters the next treatment stage or receiving tank.

The bacteria attached to the fixed bed convert contaminants into biomass. This biomass is retained on the filter media along with the solids present in the wastewater.
