Induction heating application cases by industry: Medical devices

Precise and clean non-contact heating! Introducing examples of high-frequency induction heating applications in medical device manufacturing.

We would like to introduce examples of the application of induction heating in the manufacturing of medical devices. Induction heating, which heats small areas with pinpoint accuracy and without contact, is suitable for the medical field where precision and cleanliness (sterility) are particularly required, such as in the processing of catheter tips, welding of injection needles, brazing of small fixtures, annealing, and the welding of metals to plastics. 【Typical Medical Applications [Heating Temperature/Time] Examples】 ■ Annealing in inert gas (steel tube): 1093°C / 15 seconds ■ Adhesion (plastic handle of surgical scalpel): 232°C / 2 seconds ■ Brazing (medical heat sensor probe): 704°C / 60 seconds ■ Hardening (steel surgical scalpel): 1093°C / 2 seconds ■ Heating and forming (steel mandrel (Teflon tube)): 371°C / 2.7 seconds ■ Plastic reflow (catheter tube): 121°C / 3.5 seconds *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Induction heating application examples: soldering

No soldering iron needed, improved maintainability.

Soldering using IH involves a process that uses a precise electromagnetic field to heat two or more conductive materials (metals) and join them with solder that melts at a temperature below the melting point of the joining material. Unlike brazing, soldering is performed at low temperatures. Compared to brazing, soldered joints may be slightly weaker, but it is suitable for certain applications such as small components. Additionally, soldering is different from welding, which involves melting the joint. 【Common Issues】 ■ Not very strong ■ Low resistance to fatigue ■ Usable temperature range is below 170°C 【Tips for Successful Soldering】 ■ Cleanliness of the surface is important ■ Bring the temperature of the connection points of both metals to the same temperature simultaneously ■ If the temperature is too high, the solder joint will not be strong ■ Instead of using solder wire or solder bars, place pre-shaped solder at the joint before heating *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Induction heating application examples: Shrink fitting

Enables large-scale processing with rapid heating.

Shrink fitting is a method of achieving a very strong joint by inserting one of two metal components into the other. Many applications involve a shaft with an outer diameter and another component such as a gear, steering knuckle, or washer with an inner diameter. By uniformly heating the inner hole, the size of the hole can be expanded, allowing the shaft to be easily inserted into the enlarged hole. Upon cooling, the hole shrinks back to its original size, creating a strong frictional joint. 【Common Issues】 ■ Poor precision of the housing's inner diameter and the shaft's outer diameter, resulting in a poor fit even after cooling ■ Misalignment during insertion, causing the shaft not to settle in the correct position ■ Contamination of the joint surfaces *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Induction Heating Application Examples: Metal Forging

Compact device configuration

Forging, the oldest method of metalworking, involves deforming metal with a hammer, which increases the metal's strength. In most cases, the heating forming process raises the temperature of the metal inside an oven. Adding heat means deforming the metal above the recrystallization temperature. This process requires uniform heating. Conventional gas furnaces and flame treatment are inefficient methods in terms of both energy and time. However, induction heating (IH) allows for rapid and precise heating of only the workpiece. Additionally, by directly placing remote workstations on the forging processing production line, it becomes possible to use this method for high-speed and large-scale forging processes. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.*

Induction heating application examples by purpose: Material hardening

Shortening the curing time

Hardening involves any process used to initiate structural changes at the chemical or molecular level in polymer materials such as epoxy, phenolic, polyester, and silicone, or to exert catalytic effects. These materials are applied in various products aimed at adhesion, protective coatings, sealing, and insulation. Typically, induction heating is used for heating metals and other conductive materials, but by using conductive metals as a susceptor for heat conduction, efficient heating can also be achieved in plastics and other non-conductive materials. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.*

Induction heating application examples by use: riveting

For a lighter and more powerful joint.

When structural elements are made of thermoplastic materials, it is possible to push a screw-type metal insert into the plastic part after heating it above the melting temperature of the plastic. There is a growing demand for lightweight yet stronger structural components, and metal inserts are frequently used when a strong connection is required. The welding of metal to plastic is one of many applications that utilize induction heating for plastic melting. Other applications that take advantage of the liquefaction of plastic include metal embedding and the manufacturing of thermoplastic composites. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.*

Application examples of induction heating: Machining of carbide tips.

Precise local heating

Carbide (hard alloy) is used at the tips of cutting tools and drills, which are essential for precision metal machining. Because this carbide is extremely hard, the methods for processing the tips to attach chips (blades) or replace worn chips are limited. Drill bits of various diameters (0.25" to 1.5") require carbide cutting tips on steel drill shafts. The brazing temperature of approximately 1900°F (1037°C) is suitable for induction heating. The time ranges from 11 seconds for a diameter of 0.5" to 32 seconds for a diameter of 1.5". In a 20kW induction heating device with a custom 4-turn helical coil (for variable sizes), coupling and heating efficiency are maximized. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.*

Applications of Induction Heating: Metal Melting

Cleanly dissolved

The high-frequency induction heating device utilizing advanced solid-state technology for induction heating power supplies excels in reliability and reproducibility, enabling highly efficient non-contact heating in a short time. Induction generates eddy currents within the molten metal, which creates a stirring effect through the forces generated, resulting in very uniform products. 【General Applications】 ■ Casting ■ Joining of metal parts ■ For machining complex-shaped parts such as turbine blades in aircraft engines, soft low-melting-point metals are used for holding purposes and are melted away. 【Melting Temperatures of Pure Metals】 Aluminum / 660°C Copper / 1083°C Graphite / 3717°C Iron / 1536°C Molybdenum / 2610°C Nickel / 1453°C Platinum / 1769°C Titanium / 1668°C *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.
