Kakihara Industries offers a variety of decorative chrome plating options, with chrome plating colors ranging from "white to dark tones" and nickel plating adjusted from "glossy to matte (satin finish)." Currently, we introduce 24 different color tones through various combinations of these finishes. Moreover, within the dark tones, there are variations with blue or red hues, and in the matte finishes, there are different levels of sheen, from a slight matte effect to a finish that significantly blurs reflections. Each color tone has unique characteristics, making them suitable for different scenes where their effects can be utilized more effectively. So, specifically, which plating colors should be used for which scenes to achieve a more effective presentation? Our company has delved a bit deeper into this topic. *For more detailed information, please refer to the related links. For further details, you can download the PDF or feel free to contact us.*

Free membership registrationWhen it comes to "plating," the well-known types are "zinc plating" that prevents metal from rusting and "gold plating" used for decorative items. However, what I will explain this time is "resin plating." As the name suggests, it is a special plating technique that creates a metallic coating on resin (plastic), giving it a metallic appearance. Invented in the United States in 1962, it is widely used in everyday items such as automobiles, home appliances, agricultural tools, construction machinery, and plumbing fixtures. You might have the impression that different materials like resin (plastic) and metal would easily peel off. However, "resin plating" does not peel off. This is because the resin (plastic) and the metal film are strongly bonded together. The reasons for this will be introduced by professionals in "resin plating." *For more details on the column, you can view it through the related links. Free membership registrationWhen we think of general plating, we often imagine a shiny metal surface, but recently, we have also seen many examples of matte plating. What exactly is this matte plating? Decorative chrome plating, used for embellishment, was originally applied to adorn dull metal appearances with brilliance. Moreover, the base for decoration is not limited to metal; in recent years, plating on resin surfaces has also become quite common. This decorative chrome plating allows for a smooth deposition on the surface, resulting in a very beautiful glossy finish. *For more detailed information, you can view the related links. Free membership registration"I think plating won't adhere to this shape." During meetings with customers, I have had to convey this line several times, feeling quite uneasy about it. Among those reading this column now, there may be some who have had similar experiences of being told the same thing by a plating manufacturer. In this column, I would like to explain from the perspective of a plating manufacturer, "Why doesn't plating adhere?" *For detailed content of the column, you can view it through the related links. Free membership registrationResin plating is typically applied to the entire surface, but if plating adheres to fastening parts or the back side other than the design surface, there is a possibility of unusual noises or malfunctions occurring at the fitting points. Partial plating is one method to address these issues. When it comes to resin plating, it is generally performed on the entire surface. Full plating allows for the beautiful appearance of real metal. However, in products, plating may also adhere to areas that fit with other components, such as bosses or claws on the back side, not just the design surface. The adhesion of plating to areas other than the design surface can lead to problems that differ from those of standard molded products. One method to tackle such issues is partial plating. With partial plating, plating is applied only to the necessary parts. This prevents plating from adhering to the contact areas with other components, thereby resolving the issues. *For detailed content of the column, you can view it through the related link. Free membership registrationIn today's technological society, the importance of electromagnetic wave shielding is increasing. Various shielding technologies are being developed to prevent electromagnetic waves emitted by electronic devices from adversely affecting surrounding devices. Particularly noteworthy are shielding techniques using paints, plating, and iron plates. We will take a closer look at each option. Electromagnetic wave shielding paint is a special paint that contains conductive powders such as copper, silver, and nickel, which can be easily applied with a spray or roller, providing a flexible shielding solution. Plating technology forms a metal layer on the product's surface, demonstrating a high electromagnetic wave shielding effect. Metals such as copper, nickel, and nickel-iron alloys are used, offering excellent wear resistance and corrosion resistance, making them durable for long-term use. *For detailed content of the column, please refer to the related link. Free membership registrationWe would like to introduce a case where our recycling system has contributed to environmental measures. Since the resin and metal in resin-coated products are strongly bonded, they cannot be easily separated. While the metal film can be dissolved using chemicals, there are concerns about resin degradation and chemical residues, leaving challenges for recycling. Therefore, we propose our recycling system, which micro-grinds resin-coated products and separates them into resin and metal components using magnetic force, making each reusable. By recycling resin-coated products that could only be disposed of as industrial waste, we have contributed to environmental measures. [Concerns] ■ Waste from resin-coated products is generated in the market and production sites, but since resin-coated products are composite materials of metal and resin, they cannot be recycled as they are. ■ Amid urgent environmental issues, we were looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact of discarded resin-coated products. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationTo reproduce the texture of iron, we would like to introduce a case where our resin-plated products were proposed. In order to create a sense of "authenticity" in automotive interiors, we were searching for decorative elements that could convey the texture of iron. While there are several ways to express appearance, achieving a true metallic feel requires not only visual representation but also a cool tactile sensation, and there was no method to reproduce this at a mass production level. Therefore, we proposed our "Light Platinum Satin TI," which can express the texture of iron through a slight matte finish and a hint of black. This contributed to enhancing the quality of the automotive interior. [Case Overview] ■ Issues Faced - While exploring automotive design, we were looking for decorative elements that could convey the texture of iron to create a sense of "authenticity" in the interior parts. ■ Key Points - Development capabilities for a new plating solution that can be mass-produced and used stably, as well as equipment development capabilities. - Management capabilities to maintain mass production. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationWe would like to introduce a case where our two-color molding technology and plating technology for two-color molded products have made it possible to prevent noise. A rubbing sound was generated from the area where the plated parts and ABS resin molded parts were combined due to vibrations from the automobile. As a countermeasure, masking agents were applied and felt was attached, but this resulted in a significant amount of labor. By proposing a two-color molding using resins that can and cannot be plated, ensuring that the contact points with the counterpart are made of resin, the rubbing sound caused by vibrations was eliminated, contributing to the creation of a comfortable environment inside the vehicle. 【Case Overview】 ■ Issues - Due to the surface condition between the chrome on the outermost layer of the plating and the resin, when vibrations were applied to the parts, they did not slide against each other, resulting in a rubbing sound. ■ Proposal - Two-color molding with a plating-compatible resin for the decorative part and a non-plating resin for the assembly part. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationWe would like to introduce a case where a trivalent chromium plating that can withstand de-icing salt in cold regions was proposed. In cold regions, de-icing salt is spread on roads, and if it remains on the surface of plated products for an extended period, the plating film corrodes. Therefore, a resin plating that can withstand de-icing salt was considered. The chromium film created from a standard hexavalent chromium plating bath has low calcium chloride resistance, and corrosion progresses in environments where large amounts of de-icing salt are used. Thus, we proposed a plating using a trivalent chromium plating bath with high calcium chloride resistance. To make the appearance closer to standard glossy chrome, we developed a new trivalent chromium (silver). [Concerns] - Calcium chloride, used as de-icing salt, dissolves in moisture to generate chloride ions, which corrode the plating film. - The chromium film created from a standard hexavalent chromium plating bath has low calcium chloride resistance, and corrosion progresses in environments where large amounts of de-icing salt are used. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationAt that time, European flagship cars were beginning to adopt a beautiful appearance resembling machined aluminum, and we would like to introduce a case where this issue was resolved with resin plating. At that time, there were only completely matte platings available in Japan that did not reflect images, and there was no company with a proven track record of mass production using those chemicals. Therefore, at our new process development department, we were researching this chemical and developing a unique plating expression by combining it with other processes. We proposed a plating color with a distinctive aluminum appearance. A resin-plated product with a unique luster specific to the manufacturer was adopted, contributing to the enhancement of the interior quality of the automobile. [Issue] ■ A beautiful appearance resembling machined aluminum has a slightly diminished gloss (a gloss that reflects images to a slight extent), but at that time, the only matte plating available in Japan was completely devoid of gloss and did not reflect images. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationWe would like to introduce a case where we solved the issue by improving the cold and heat cycle resistance of thick-walled resin plating products. The problem was that decorative chrome plating was applied to PC+ABS, but the coefficients of thermal expansion of the metals that make up the decorative chrome plating—copper, nickel, and chromium—are significantly smaller compared to PC+ABS. As a result, the plating film could not withstand the stress when temperature was applied, leading to the occurrence of cracks. We proposed improving the shape of the stress concentration points. As a result, the cold and heat cycle resistance was enhanced, allowing us to mass-produce and deliver high-quality products, thereby ensuring safety in the market and gaining trust from our customers. [Case Overview (Partial)] ■ Issues - Decorative chrome plating of thick-walled resin parts, which are touched by hand in automotive components, was being mass-produced by another company, but cracks appeared in the plating in the market, necessitating countermeasures. - We wanted to improve cold and heat cycle resistance as a countermeasure against cracks. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationWe have developed a "Resin Plating Recycling System" technology that efficiently separates resin and metal from resin-plated products. This method uses physical peeling through fine grinding, and does not use any chemicals that could cause resin degradation. The separated resin is sorted and pelletized for reformation. The metal can be reduced to its raw form. [Key Points] ■ By using recycled resin in plated products, CO2 emissions can be reduced by approximately 80%. ■ Since no chemicals are used, there is no material degradation due to chemicals. ■ Contributing to reduced environmental impact through material recycling of resin-plated products. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationUntil now, hexavalent chromium has been considered an indispensable substance in resin plating manufacturing, but due to its toxicity, it is predicted that it will no longer be usable in the plating process in the future. Kakihara Industries has been mass-producing trivalent chromium plating for over 20 years, with the aim of enhancing dark and luxurious design aesthetics. Recently, as the use of hexavalent chromium is being restricted from an environmental impact reduction perspective, there has been an increasing demand to use trivalent chromium plating not for design enhancement but for environmental compliance. The silver-toned trivalent chromium plating that our company has traditionally offered is widely used in extremely cold regions due to its excellent resistance to de-icing salt corrosion, but it has been characterized by a slightly yellow-black hue. Anticipating that environmentally friendly plating that can express a color tone similar to the bluish-silver of hexavalent chromium plating will be required in the future, we have developed "Silvest Chrome Plating," a trivalent chromium plating that can express blue tones and high brightness. *For details on color tones, please refer to the downloadable materials below.
