Mechanism of action of wetting dispersants and the resulting effects. By using a de-agglomeration type wetting dispersant to widen the distance between fillers, thixotropy is weakened and approaches Newtonian viscosity, resulting in a significant reduction in viscosity, especially at low shear rates.

It functions as a defoamer during manufacturing and application. It also reduces surface tension, improves leveling and wettability, and prevents the formation of Benard cells. The reduction in surface tension can be mitigated by decreasing the polarity of the binder system.

BYK-A 560 N is recommended for all fiber-reinforced unsaturated polyester applications. BYK-A 560 N also demonstrates excellent degassing properties in certain gel coats, particularly in systems where airless processes are used. It is commonly used to improve the wettability of fibers. Wettability is enhanced in all common application methods, including RTM, injection, infusion, winding, and laminating. In pull-out molding applications, BYK-A 560 N improves degassing in the resin tank, prevents air entrapment, and enhances the wettability of fibers during processing.

When a suitable defoamer/antifoam agent is added, it replaces the surfactants oriented at the foam interface, disrupting the stabilization of the foam. This allows small bubbles to coalesce into larger bubbles, which rise to the surface more quickly (according to Stokes' law), and the liquid in the lamella layer is also drained rapidly, removing the surface foam.
