Free membership registrationIn 2018, the Sakai-Nishikawa Laboratory of the Department of Chemical System Engineering at the University of Tokyo was developing a device called "Intestinal MPS (Microphysiological System)" to replicate the human intestinal environment as part of a human mimicry project promoted by AMED. To recreate blood flow and peristaltic movement in the intestinal tract within plates used for culturing iPS cells for drug discovery experiments, the laboratory initially handmade prototypes or requested trials from pharmaceutical manufacturers. However, they could not find a company capable of producing complex prototypes that required intricate control and had no plans for mass production. They then consulted Takasago Electric Industry, which specializes in microfluidic control and small-batch, customized production. For the reproduction of blood flow, they utilized a perfusion device (a culture apparatus that continuously flows culture medium) that had already been developed in-house. However, there were no valves that could operate at the required speed for simulating peristaltic movement, so they came up with the idea of using a valve to send air into the plate and move the culture membrane using air pressure, leading to trial and error. Finally, in January 2019, they successfully combined a micro needle valve capable of flow adjustment with a quantitative pump, enabling them to move the culture membrane at the requested speed.

Free membership registrationThe portable medium exchange system has been redesigned for space use and is scheduled to be used in experiments on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2021. This device is planned to be used for the exchange of solutions such as media and reagents in cell culture experiments conducted in the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" on the ISS. [Challenges and Solutions] Until now, the solution exchange in cell culture experiments on "Kibo" was done manually by astronauts, which took up valuable time for routine work involving the exchange of solutions for numerous samples. Therefore, we aimed to automate the solution exchange to reduce the burden on astronauts as much as possible and to improve work efficiency. In preparation for use on the ISS, the flow path was changed to a closed system to prevent liquid floating and sample contamination in microgravity. Additionally, we made design changes to achieve further miniaturization and lightweight construction while ensuring vibration resistance during launch. From the perspective of fluid control technology, our company automates various processes in cell culture. Applications such as perfusion, subculturing, differentiation induction, and live cell imaging are possible. Furthermore, we have the know-how to redesign these for space specifications. If you have any needs, please feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationTechshot is a company that designs, develops, and sells unique experimental equipment for use in space. The experimental module with a built-in pump was first launched to the ISS during the SpaceX mission CRS-20 in early March 2020. **Challenges and Solutions** The MVP Cell-03 mission is a study aimed at verifying the increased growth rate of cardiac cells placed in microgravity. During the experiment, the cardiac cells grew in a specially designed cell culture experimental module made by Techshot. One of the challenges Techshot faced in developing the microgravity experimental device was miniaturization. The RP-Q series is a pump small enough to fit on a fingertip, yet it provides the 3 mL/min required by Techshot, outperforming similar-sized products from other manufacturers. Additionally, using a simple structure with fewer sealing points in the tube pump helps reduce the potential for leaks. Founded over 30 years ago, Techshot is one of the world's leading commercial space companies. We are pleased that Takasago Electric Industrial's small pumps can contribute to scientific advancement alongside Techshot.

Free membership registrationBlossom Coffee is a design and development company based in San Francisco, USA, specializing in coffee equipment. Their newly developed coffee brewer is a professional-grade product that can control the supply temperature of the coffee beans and water, which significantly affects the taste and aroma of the coffee, within a range of 50 to 95°C in increments of 0.5°C. It has been featured on television networks such as ABC and BBC in the United States and is also sold in Japan. **Challenges and Solutions** The initial prototypes of the coffee brewer were equipped with pinch valves from other manufacturers, but frequent malfunctions occurred, prompting the company to seek our assistance. Our engineers determined that the cause of the malfunctions was the temperature rise inside the device due to the heat from the water. To resolve the issue, we proposed a product that uses custom coils with higher heat resistance than standard products, which was accepted. The customer was very satisfied with our prompt response and the resolution of the problem compared to traditional valve manufacturers. The development of the coffee brewer was completed as scheduled, and it was successfully launched at the end of 2015.

Free membership registrationIn order to realize a liquid crystal display that can be used in outer space, as part of the "Oasis" project, which was experimented on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2015, research was conducted on the formation of single-layer liquid crystals and the mechanisms of defect occurrence in a microgravity environment that is difficult to replicate on Earth. Our company's compact and lightweight pumps (syringe-type and tube-type) were installed in the experimental apparatus. [Challenges and Solutions] In 2008, NASA contacted our company because they were looking for pumps that were as small and lightweight as possible, given the need to transport them to the International Space Station (ISS) via rocket and the limited experimental space within the station. After undergoing various long-term verifications, including ground experiments and microgravity experiments using aircraft, the specifications of the pumps within the apparatus were adjusted, leading to a successful launch and experiment. Equipment used for space experiments requires thorough miniaturization and lightweight design to reduce launch costs. Of course, quality and precision cannot be compromised. We received high praise for our ability to flexibly respond to numerous verification results while continuously providing high-quality products.

Free membership registrationThe Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has been using ships to observe the concentration of carbon dioxide in the ocean in order to more accurately grasp the distribution of carbon dioxide absorption and release on a global scale. However, feeling the limitations of traditional methods, they developed a "carbon dioxide observation buoy" that observes while drifting on the ocean surface. Our products were incorporated into the core flow cell part of this buoy. Traditional devices required several gas cylinders, and the overall size of the equipment was approximately 1900mm in height, 1200mm in width, and 600mm in depth, making it large, heavy, and expensive. The newly developed device is called the "carbon dioxide observation buoy." By exchanging carbon dioxide with the surrounding seawater through a gas permeable membrane, the pH of the pH indicator solution changes as carbon dioxide enters and exits, resulting in a change in the color of the solution. By using a micro pump to supply the pH indicator solution, a valve for replacement, and a flow cell for measurement, and by manifoldizing the flow paths connecting these components, we contributed to miniaturizing the interior of the buoy, reducing its size to a diameter of 260mm and a total length of 600mm. The completed measurement device successfully conducted a year-long drifting observation in the Southern Ocean.

Free membership registrationIt is said that in the near future, humanity will live in outer space. For long-term living, technologies that efficiently produce food and beverages with limited resources, as well as a delicious diet that allows for a fulfilling life even in a closed environment, will be key. How will the fermentation process change in the vastly different environment of space? What fermentation conditions will be optimal? This time, we have designed a device to conduct such experiments. It can be equipped with sensors to monitor alcohol concentration and beer flavor components, allowing for the evaluation of brewing quality during unmanned experiments on satellites. Additionally, it has a compact structure suitable for use on the space station. Takasago Electric Industry provided parts and technical advice for the construction of a lunar beer brewing device by American students in 2017. While there is gravity on the moon, brewing beer in the weightlessness of outer space requires a completely closed system, necessitating more advanced technology for gas management and internal agitation. We have addressed such challenges and have also filed for a patent. Cheers with beer brewed in space while looking at Earth! Isn't that exciting? This is a project filled with dreams and hopes, looking towards the future of humanity heading into space!
