[Key Lecture Content]
The world is steadily progressing towards energy transition (expansion of renewable energy, advancement of electrification, and rapid increase in demand). As the introduction of renewable energy accelerates and the interconnection of power systems and offshore wind connections advance further, Multi-Terminal Direct Current (MTDC) systems provide many benefits, such as optimizing capital investment and efficiently utilizing renewable energy. Additionally, they dynamically control power flows between multiple terminals and different power markets, contributing to congestion relief and improved resilience. In Europe, an increase in MTDC and Multi-purpose Interconnectors (MPI) is expected, with a future shift towards DC grid systems. This lecture will explain the trends related to MTDC.
