Can residual chlorine be measured with a chloride ion electrode? Chloride ions are the chlorine components dissolved in water. In other words, they refer to the chlorine components in dissolved chlorides in water. For example, table salt is sodium chloride (NaCl), which, when dissolved in water, separates into Na⁺ and Cl⁻. Cl⁻ becomes chloride ions in water. Chloride ions are an important water quality parameter measured in various fields such as food, chemistry, aquaculture, sewage treatment, and rivers, serving as an indicator of salinity. Residual chlorine refers to all effective chlorine (chlorine with disinfection effect or oxidation power) remaining in water, which includes free residual chlorine and combined residual chlorine. As mentioned above, chloride ions and residual chlorine are different entities. Therefore, a high concentration of chloride ions does not necessarily mean that there is sufficient chlorine for disinfection. Additionally, residual chlorine cannot be measured with a chloride ion meter.
