[Analysis Case] Characterization of Biodegradable Plastics (PLA) by Thermal Analysis
Discovery DSC / Discovery DMA
Using PLA beverage cups as measurement samples, thermal and mechanical properties were investigated utilizing thermal analysis techniques such as temperature-modulated DSC and DMA!
As the industrial sector has begun to focus more on developing and manufacturing environmentally friendly products, various new biodegradable polymers have been adopted. Poly(Lactic Acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable aliphatic polyester produced from lactic acid obtained through the saccharification and fermentation of starch. Due to its high mechanical strength comparable to PETE and good biocompatibility, PLA has been commonly used in biomedical applications such as sutures and stents, but the expansion of PLA's applications is being considered. Understanding the properties of PLA is essential for the development of new applications. We present materials that investigate the thermal and mechanical properties of PLA-based beverage cups using temperature-modulated DSC and DMA. *Please download the materials.

basic information
◆Discovery DSC Differential Scanning Calorimeter Measures temperature transitions in materials along with associated thermal temperature and heat flow. Common applications include investigation, selection, comparison, and final performance evaluation of materials in research, quality control, and manufacturing. Characteristics measured by TA Instruments' DSC technology include glass transition, "cold" crystallization, phase changes, melting, crystallization, product stability, curing/cure reaction rates, and oxidation stability. ◆Discovery DMA Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer Measures the mechanical properties of materials as a function of time, temperature, and frequency. In addition to basic material properties, DMA quantifies finishing characteristics and reflects the significant contributions of processing to final performance. DMA is commonly used to measure glass transition temperature and secondary transitions, orientation induced by processing, cold crystallization, curing optimization, and filler effects in composites. DMA not only provides an accurate measure of material stiffness (modulus) but also offers insights into other important mechanical properties such as damping, creep, and stress relaxation.
