CdZnTe semiconductor detector GR1

A small, lightweight, high-resolution semiconductor detector for gamma rays that can be used at room temperature, for quality inspection of radioactive drugs, nuclear physics research, and decommissioning.

The GR1 is a gamma-ray detector that uses a large-volume CdZnTe semiconductor detector measuring 10x10x10mm. It is compact and lightweight, approximately 25x25x63mm (60g), yet it is a complete gamma-ray spectrometer with an integrated 4k channel MCA. While the energy resolution (FWHM) of a typical NaI(Tl) scintillation detector is about 7%, the GR1 has a high energy discrimination capability of less than 2.5% (at 662 keV). Additionally, it does not require cooling to liquid nitrogen temperatures like Ge semiconductor detectors, making it ready for use at any time without incurring running costs. Operation is simple; you can start measuring immediately by connecting the GR1 to a PC (Windows 10 or higher) using a commercially available USB cable. A basic control program is provided free of charge. The GR1 can perform spectral measurements with excellent energy resolution even under high dose rates of approximately 1 mSv/hr.

Conventional neutron beam detector has several issues such as the detection unit size is large, the power source is necessary, the device is complicated so the design becomes costly, the noise is included in the signal current, an expensive gas is required, and lastly the detector is expensive due to the design & manufacturing cost.  This invention is about a low cost high accurate compact neutron beam detector that doesn’t require power source, and has a simple structure by using a commercially available ■■. Since the highly radiation-resistant semiconductor has been used as an element, it is expected to be used in high neutron flux environment such as neutron flux measurement, for example the boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) which is a next generation cancer treatment.

Tohoku University Technology: Eye-readable hydrogen detection system for metals: T21-064

On field visual detection of hydrogen permeation into metallic material

In order to prevent hydrogen embrittlement in which hydrogen penetrates into a material and degrades its mechanical property such as strength, it is effective to visualize distribution of hydrogen penetrated into the material. Silver decoration method and hydrogen microprint technique are known as conventional hydrogen observation methods, but these methods are not able to detect the time variation of the hydrogen distribution in real-time. In the past, Tohoku University made the real-time detection possible by using metallic oxide, but the sensitivity was low and could not detect the small amount of hydrogen atoms that migrate into the material due to corrosion.  This system is able to detect the hydrogen in real time with high sensitivity and high spatial resolution in an actual environment. This technology is effective for example to visually judge hydrogen permeation into plant equipment.

Both PET and conventional radiation detectors can prevent polarization and can be used for a long time

The present invention relates to a thallium halide radiation detector such as thallium bromide (TlBr) used in a positron tomography imaging diagnostic apparatus (PET), a single-photon radiation computed tomography apparatus (SPECT), and the like, and to PET or SPECT equipped therewith.   On the background of PET, a radiation detector using a CdTe crystal is used for a high-performance type detector, but it has a problem that it is a covalent crystal, has a high melting point, and is expensive to fabricate. For example, the price of only a crystal per device is expensive at several hundred million yen. Therefore, thallium halide such as TlBr, which is inexpensive, has attracted attention as an alternative material to CdTe.  According to the present invention, since conduction ions in thallium halide crystals such as TlBr do not cause polarization phenomena in the detector, an inexpensive thallium halide radiation detector with a long lifetime can be obtained. In addition, the present invention is applicable to general radiation detectors, not limited to PET.
