"Neo-TOM molding" is a method that has evolved the TOM process for decorating ultra-large products (such as automobile bodies). A major feature is that while conventional jigs were solid, this method utilizes gas, allowing for the coating of surface materials on substrates with complex shapes that have cavities, without deformation or damage. A clear explanation of the extrusion molding process in a video!

Extrusion molding is divided into five main processes. (1) The material fed into the extruder is heated and melted into a gooey state, then extruded towards the mold like "tokoroten" (a type of Japanese jelly). The materials vary in hardness; some are soft like rubber, while others are hard. (2) In the mold, the melted material from the extruder takes on the shape of the mold. (3) In a water tank, the extruded shape is cooled and shaped properly. (4) The formed products are transported by a take-up machine. Although it is called extrusion molding, it is actually being pulled. The dimensions are adjusted by varying the pull strength, similar to how gum stretches. We have developed 3D printer filament materials for metals and ceramics that can be used with filament-type 3D printers, which are becoming more widespread under the MEX method. The filament type uses a rod-shaped filament material that is fed by gears, and the material is extruded from a heated nozzle and layered. By balancing factors such as "flexibility for winding into filament shape" and "strength for 3D printing through gear extrusion" while mixing metals and ceramics, we have created filament materials that enable the 3D printing of metals and ceramics with filament-type 3D printers.
