"Isonite TF treatment" is a soft nitriding process conducted in a salt bath, which is an effective surface treatment for all iron-based metals. Since the treatment is performed at a relatively low temperature of 580°C, which is far below the quenching temperature of steel, it is very advantageous in terms of deformation and dimensional changes. The nitrogen and carbon elements generated by the reactions in the salt bath penetrate and diffuse into the workpiece, forming a compound layer (iron nitride) on the very surface, with a diffusion layer just beneath it. The diffusion layer significantly improves fatigue strength, with improvements of more than twice observed, especially in carbon steel.
