Surface treatment - hard chrome plating

Also known as industrial chrome plating, it is a representative industrial plating that possesses many excellent mechanical properties such as wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and release properties.

Hard chrome plating is a technique known as electroplating, which uses electrical power to reduce metal ions in a solution and form a new coating (chromium metal) on the surface of the material. This allows for functionality to be applied only to the necessary areas, enabling the use of materials with minimal required functions instead of expensive high-performance materials. By applying hard chrome plating to the surface, it is possible to fully utilize the functions while keeping material costs low. Additionally, because it can be reprocessed, if a product gets scratched, it can be easily repaired by stripping the plating and re-plating. Even if dimensions become smaller due to wear, repairs can be made by adding material through plating. Otec also develops original chrome plating, including "Tef-Lock," a plating that incorporates Teflon for excellent release properties, and "Cloamore," a plating that increases hardness and achieves crack resistance by adding carbon to the chrome plating. At the request of customers, it is also possible to process the surface to a super mirror finish or a matte finish. For more details, please contact us. URL: http://www.otec-kk.co.jp/

Surface treatment: hydrophilic treatment chrome plating

This is a specification with improved hydrophilicity.

This treatment improves hydrophilicity by widening the microcracks in hard chrome plating. Compared to standard hard chrome plating, it has better water affinity. It is an ideal treatment for applications aimed at retaining lubricants and coating liquids. Widening the microcracks also carries the risk of accelerating corrosion compared to standard chrome plating, so please consult us first.

Double plating for improved corrosion resistance.

The multilayering of hard chrome plating improves corrosion resistance by reducing the penetration of microcracks. It is effective when you want to keep costs down.

Hard chrome plating is not only excellent in wear resistance but is also sometimes applied to protect the surface of iron from rust; however, its corrosion resistance is not perfect. This is due to the presence of microcracks, which are tiny cracks that are not visible to the naked eye, on the surface of the hard chrome plating. Some of these microcracks penetrate all the way from the surface to the base material. Therefore, while hard chrome plating does not corrode when exposed to humid environments that are prone to condensation or environments with strong corrosive gases, corrosion factors can reach the base material through the cracks, and once corrosion begins in the base material itself, it can ultimately lead to the plating peeling off from the base material. For this reason, there are cases where the use of chrome plating for rust prevention is abandoned due to the usage environment; however, there are actually methods to improve corrosion resistance. One such method is to create a multilayered hard chrome layer. By reapplying plating after the chrome plating finish, the number of microcracks that penetrate to the base material can be reduced, thereby enhancing corrosion resistance. Nickel plating is also a method to improve corrosion resistance, but it is not suitable for environments that corrode nickel, such as those with ozone; thus, the technology of multilayering chrome plating is adopted as a countermeasure.

High corrosion-resistant plating "Hybrid Chrome" (under prototype development)

We have successfully achieved high corrosion resistance that significantly exceeds 24 hours in the Cass test through the hybridization (composite) of plating films and inorganic materials!

Hybrid chrome is a technology that enhances the functional properties of chrome plating by hybridizing (compositing) chrome plating films with inorganic materials. Our company has successfully achieved corrosion resistance that significantly exceeds 24 hours in the Cass test through hybridization with glassy materials. By sealing the micro-cracks, which are a weakness of chrome plating, corrosion resistance has been greatly improved, and at the same time, it also prevents the intrusion of foreign substances into the cracks.

Micro crack plating "Clo-Fine" achieves high hardness and high corrosion resistance!

Further improve the hardness and corrosion resistance of hard chrome plating with micro-crack plating!

Typically, hard chrome plating is performed using a bath made of anhydrous chromic acid and sulfuric acid, referred to as a "Sargent bath," dissolved in water. Its hardness ranges from HV750 to 900, which is quite excellent, but even so, under harsh usage conditions, wear of the plating is unavoidable. Additionally, the cracks (fine fissures) present in the hard chrome plating layer can expand when heat is applied, which can be problematic depending on the application. However, our company has developed "CRO-FINE," which solves these issues by improving the components of the plating bath. 【Features】 ■ Hardness is excellent at HV950 to 1000 ■ Compared to typical hard chrome plating, the extent of crack expansion due to heating is smaller ■ Although there are many cracks, they are narrow and shallow, resulting in minimal penetration to the substrate and excellent corrosion resistance ■ Not only is it excellent in wear resistance, but it also reduces the wear amount of the opposing material *For more details, please refer to the related links or feel free to contact us.

Teflon-impregnated micro-crack coating "Tef-Lock Fine"

Achieve maintenance of lubricity and improved load-bearing capacity and durability with micro-crack plating + PTFE!

We have a product called "Tef-Lock," which is our original plating that incorporates PTFE into hard chrome plating. This is a composite surface treatment that combines the high hardness and wear resistance of chrome plating with the low friction and lubrication properties of PTFE. However, in high-load environments where chrome plating may wear away, it has been difficult to maintain low friction and lubrication. However, we have developed "Tef-Lock Fine" by impregnating PTFE into our original Cro-Fine (high-hardness micro-crack chrome plating) coating, which solves these issues. 【Features】 ■ Hardness increased compared to conventional Tef-Lock (HV850 → HV900) ■ Increased crack density and higher PTFE content compared to conventional Tef-Lock ■ Maintains low friction under high loads and exhibits excellent wear resistance *For more details, please refer to the related links or feel free to contact us.

High Hardness Flash Plating "Cloamore"

The world's first amorphous chrome plating that achieves approximately twice the hardness of hard chrome plating (HV1800).

The world's first amorphous chrome "Cloamor" is a chromium-based alloy plating that contains 2-4% carbon. Despite its thin film thickness of 3-4μ, it boasts high hardness and excellent wear resistance. 【Features】 ● It has an amorphous structure, exhibiting different properties compared to conventional crystalline structure plating. ● Through heat treatment, its hardness can reach a maximum of Hv 1,800, which is about twice that of hard chrome plating. ● In comparison to hard chrome plating, which rapidly softens at 400°C and only has a hardness of about Hv 200 at 600°C, once hardened, Cloamor maintains a hardness of Hv 1,000 even at 600°C, demonstrating excellent heat resistance. ● Due to the influence of the oxide film present on the surface, it has superior wear resistance compared to standard chrome plating. ● With no cracks present up to approximately 5μm in thickness, it exhibits good corrosion resistance. ● It has about 3 to 6 times the corrosion resistance against chemicals such as hydrochloric acid compared to hard chrome plating. ● Its thin film thickness of 3-4μ allows for functional enhancement of the base material without compromising precision. It demonstrates excellent effectiveness in fields requiring strict precision, such as semiconductor encapsulation molds and various precision components.
