Flooded road driving simulation using SimericsMP

Introduction to the simulation of floodway driving as a case study of free surface analysis.

In this article, we will introduce application examples that can be useful for product development using Simerics' CAE/CFD software. In particular, in Japan, there are many instances of flooding, and there are situations where we must drive on submerged roads. Creating vehicles that can withstand flooded road conditions has become one of the important challenges in automotive development, but this requires spending a lot of cost and time on prototype manufacturing and testing. CFD simulations tend to become large-scale and take a long time to compute, but with Simerics' CFD, high-performance free surface fluid analysis can be processed quickly through large-scale parallel computing, allowing for easy and rapid results. The complex engine compartment is also modeled in detail, reproducing conditions close to actual experiments. Of course, changes in water depth and driving speed are also easily possible. From these calculation results, we can understand the pathways and amounts of water intrusion, providing feedback for shape design and preventing damage and electric shock. Simulation of the magnetic mirror effect of Particle-PLUS

Our self-developed particle method plasma analysis software 'Particle-PLUS' is suitable not only for plasma analysis applications but also for fundamental research on particle confinement using electric and magnetic fields. In this case, we newly constructed a simulation model aimed at high-precision evaluation of the magnetic mirror effect, confirming that the calculation results, such as magnetic moment and loss cone region, are consistent with the results predicted by particle kinetics. A Rich Society Opened Up by Computer Simulations

As part of my research on the boundary element method, I conducted studies on: 1) solving sequential shape optimization problems using the boundary element method, 2) optimal design of coil spring cross-sectional shapes using the boundary element method, and 3) research on adaptive mesh methods in the boundary element method. Additionally, I authored a text for engineering beginners on the boundary element method and finite element method titled "Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations," as well as a related text on linear algebra titled "Linear Algebra for Computation." The Trefftz method is a boundary-type analysis method, but it differs in that it uses integral equations without singularities. Therefore, I advanced research on the engineering applications of the Trefftz method, including: 1) proposing a sensitivity analysis method using the Trefftz method, 2) proposing a higher-order design sensitivity analysis method using the Trefftz method, 3) proposing an adaptive mesh method for the Trefftz method, 4) simulating the sloshing phenomenon of water surface waves using the Trefftz method, and 5) conducting thermal conduction analysis of functionally graded materials using the Trefftz method. I served as a guest editor for a special issue commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Trefftz method in an international journal. I also authored "Introduction to the Trefftz Method."

This paper demonstrates that the differences between model-scale flow and full-scale flow have significant impacts. It has been found that in various projects, the ranking of design candidates in optimization or the operating conditions in trim optimization differ between model-scale and full-scale calculations. The differences between model-scale and full-scale are particularly evident in the relatively different boundary layers and breaking waves behind the transom stern. Therefore, in simulation-based design projects, full-scale analysis is considered preferable. In rule-based optimization, the choice of approach becomes more complex due to time and computational resource constraints. The hybrid calculation method that reuses CFD information and metamodeling is seen as a technology that paves the way for using full-scale CFD as a standard option in optimization.
