Tohoku University Technology:Provide carbon fiber reinforced plastics with good metal coating adhesion: T22-150

Manufacturing method of metal-coated fiber reinforced plastics

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are used in many fields because of its light weight, high strength and corrosion resistance. However, CFRP is known to have low electrical conductivity. So when it is used in aircraft fuselage as example, there is a risk of damage due to lightning strike. Therefore, increase conductivity by forming a metallic film on the CFRP surface (metallization) is expected as a method to solve this issue. The cold spray method, which can be applied at low temperature with only little damage to CFRP, is attracting attention as a metallization method. Preliminary study has examined a method of forming metallic coating consisting of tin [1][2]. However, tin/CFRP interface has low adhesion strength. The methods to improve adhesion strength have been developed, such as the use of additive or surface treatment of CFRP, but they are not industrially ideal due to cost. This invention is about metal-coated CFRP with improved adhesion strength by using a simple method that does not require pre-treatment or post-treatment, and its manufacturing method.

Integrated production of CFRP products

Consistent support from design to manufacturing and product evaluation! We also offer proposals including shape design suitable for CFRP materials.

At Fujikura Rubber Industry, we provide comprehensive support from the design and manufacturing of CFRP products to product evaluation. In anisotropic materials, where strength and elasticity differ due to the direction of the inherent carbon fibers, the material properties have separate values for the fiber direction and the direction perpendicular to the fibers. Considering these properties, we design CFRP structures by orienting the fibers in any desired direction to achieve the required rigidity and strength. We offer proposals that include not only the simple replacement of steel materials with CFRP materials but also shape designs suitable for CFRP materials. 【Features】 ■ FEM simulation of orthotropic materials *For more details, please refer to our catalog or feel free to contact us.

[Basic Knowledge] A Major Reason Why Processing CFRP is Considered Very Difficult

Leave the processing of CFRP materials to us! About the processing of carbon fiber and CFRP.

I am explaining a major reason why processing CFRP is said to be very difficult. When I actually processed CFRP, I was surprised at how much more severe the tool wear was than I had imagined. Initially, I tried using a brand new uncoated tool for aluminum that was available in-house, and after exceeding 50mm, burrs, delamination, and separation occurred. I knew that wear was severe, but I did not expect it to wear out this quickly. I realized that as soon as the tool starts to wear even slightly, burrs, delamination, and fiber residue occur, affecting the finished surface. [Reasons] ■ Tool wear is extremely severe ■ When the tool is dull, it is easy for burrs, delamination, and fiber residue to occur *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Ultra-lightweight structures using thermoplastic fiber-reinforced materials.

Achieving one-shot molding of high-rigidity ultra-lightweight structures through thermoplastic fiber-reinforced materials and foaming molding.

The exterior of the product is made of thermoplastic fiber-reinforced materials characterized by high rigidity and strength, represented by cross materials and UD. The lightweight and high rigidity are achieved by incorporating randomly oriented or short fiber thermoplastic reinforced materials that have been foamed internally to reduce weight. The interlayer strength of each reinforcing material is improved through one-shot molding, resulting in high reliability as an ultra-lightweight structure. Additionally, since it can be molded in one shot, it offers excellent productivity compared to traditional structures that require multiple processes. The sample of the demon tile is merely a conceptual sample and not a production item, but it meets the requirements for an ultra-lightweight structure.

Material properties of CFRP and CFRTP and precision press processing know-how_Technical Document

It is a lightweight and high-strength composite material, but the stable supply of the material is difficult, and there are challenges specific to advanced processing. We are currently publishing materials that explain the material properties and processing methods!

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP and CFRTP) are composite materials that are high in strength, resistant to rust, and excel in heat resistance and conductivity. However, due to their high strength, they are also difficult to process and are considered hard-to-machine materials. Additionally, the procurement of carbon fiber materials is challenging, and the production process tends to have low productivity, making these materials very expensive. At our company, Yamada Manufacturing Co., Ltd., we have accumulated processing achievements in CFRP and CFRTP and possess extensive know-how. Therefore, we are capable of performing trim and press processing aimed at reducing manufacturing costs. This document, "Technical Data: Material Properties and Processing Know-How of CFRP and CFRTP (Thermosetting and Thermoplastic Resins)," summarizes these insights and experiences from our perspective in an easy-to-understand manner! Please use it when considering material selection and processing vendors. ⇒ You can immediately view the document from [PDF Download].

Industrial machinery/equipment material 'CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic)'

We support the production of carbon CFRP products from design to assembly through advanced technology.

"CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic)" is an adhesive material. It can be bonded with materials such as stainless steel, iron, aluminum, and GFRP, allowing for the creation of CFRP hybrid materials like CFRP + stainless steel and CFRP + aluminum. Aerospace/Spacecraft Material: CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic)

We will leverage our many years of experience in design and production! You can trust us with carbon (CFRP) molds.

We would like to introduce "CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic)" in the field of aerospace/spacecraft. The design and manufacturing of molds for carbon (CFRP) leverage years of experience, where we press and bond, then machine using 3 to 5-axis processing, and provide surface treatment before delivery. With this know-how, we manufacture automotive racing parts, mass-produced automobiles, and molds for secondary and tertiary structural materials for aircraft. 【Features】 ■ The design and manufacturing of molds for carbon (CFRP) utilize years of experience. ■ Surface treatment is provided before delivery. ■ With this know-how, we manufacture automotive racing parts, mass-produced automobiles, and molds for secondary and tertiary structural materials for aircraft. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.
