A 3D laser scanner is a high-speed measuring device that acquires data at the rate of tens of thousands of points per second over a full 360° range around the machine. It calculates distances by sending laser light back and forth between the scanner and the object without direct contact, obtaining three-dimensional coordinate values based on the angle and distance of the emitted light. The data collected by the laser scanner is read using specialized software, and the coordinate data is represented as points (dots) on a PC screen. The collection of measurement points is referred to as point cloud data.
