[Cleaning Example] Cooling Block

Improved flow by 1.35%! Here is a case study on the clean removal of rust and calcium attached to the circuit.

We would like to introduce a case where we performed cleaning of cooling blocks at the request of a packaging manufacturer in the medical field. There was a significant amount of calcium and aluminum corrosion deposits near the entrance of the circuit and inside the circuit, confirmed by an endoscope camera. We took custody of the mold to carry out the work, and both rust and calcium were thoroughly removed. We would like to introduce a case where we performed cleaning of the internal circuits of a cooling unit at the request of an automotive parts manufacturer. Cooling Circuit Cleaning Case: Jet Engine Test Facility

We would like to introduce a case of cleaning the heat transfer tubes and cooling plates of jet engine test equipment for companies engaged in equipment-related businesses. The cleaning process involved preparing hydrochloric acid for cleaning, followed by neutralizing agents and rust prevention treatment. However, due to the labor-intensive nature of the process, a review of the work method was being considered. After 24 hours of starting the cleaning, the filter was replaced to capture rust and scale. Additionally, after 48 hours, a total flow of 6133 liters was passed through to remove dirt. To achieve efficient production, it is necessary to maintain a constant temperature for the mold. When a mold is newly created, it can be produced at a consistent cycle time, but if maintenance of the cooling circuit is neglected, cooling will gradually become less effective, leading to shrinkage and deformation in the products. This will result in a slight extension of the cycle time, and a 10% extension directly translates to a 10% decrease in production efficiency. To prevent efficiency loss, we regularly disassemble the molds and use drills to clear out deposits from the cooling circuits, but this stops production during that time, and the effort required for disassembly and cleaning is not insignificant. Recently, there has been an increase in items that cannot be cleaned using physical methods, such as circuits created with 3D printers. Typically, in machining with machine tools, oil-based or water-soluble cutting fluids are used. This serves the purpose of lubricating the cutting point, removing heat generated by cutting, and discharging chips. However, some materials can undergo work hardening of chips when cooled during processing, which can actually shorten tool life. A commonly used material that falls into this category is SUS304. In the machining of SUS304, semi-dry machining using mist or completely dry machining without any cutting fluid is often employed. Is it possible to process without applying any oil or moisture to the workpiece, claiming that lubrication and cooling at the cutting point are unnecessary? In many cases, cleaning and degreasing are sufficient, but there are instances where that is not enough. Even if cutting fluids are stopped, oil is used in the rotating parts of the machine tool, and it is common to see a slight seepage, even if it does not drip. Achieve a mirror finish through cutting processing! Our company can achieve a surface roughness of Ra 20nm or less with the hands of skilled technicians!

There are various ways to express surface roughness, but most are represented by Ra or Rz. All units are in micrometers (μ). In machining, a typical limit is around Rz3.2. Depending on the orientation of the machined surface, it can be increased further, but for freeform surfaces machined with a ball, this is a good guideline. Beyond this, we enter the realm of polishing and grinding. Even for freeform surfaces, our company can achieve a finish of Ra0.1 through the use of special tools. Going beyond Ra0.1 is a domain that is difficult to achieve with machines. However, thanks to our skilled technicians, we can achieve surface roughness below Ra20nm. When machining a concave spherical surface from a material with a hardness of HRc55, we used CBN tools, but there was a profile difference of about 15μ. It looks like an eggshell has been peeled! When the mold rusts, it can cause cracks and water leaks, so be sure to take care of it before that happens!

S50C and other types of steel excel in strength and thermal conductivity, but they are vulnerable to rust and corrosion. Stainless steel is resistant to rust, but it has only about one-third the thermal conductivity of iron and half that of S55C. On the other hand, even in stainless steel, if there are regular iron parts in the cooling water channels, rust can occur there, leading to a phenomenon called "secondary rust," making it more susceptible to rust. Therefore, regular cleaning and maintenance are recommended. For parts that can be disassembled, dirt can be removed using ultrasonic cleaning and electrolysis.
