Plant growth is easily influenced by environmental conditions, and every year there are reports of poor crop growth and damage due to droughts and floods caused by abnormal weather, as well as extreme temperatures. On the other hand, various plants in nature endure and grow in stress environments such as deserts, wetlands, and polar regions, and understanding the mechanisms of these plants' environmental resilience is important for future crop breeding and environmental conservation. We aim to clarify the roles of plant hormones involved in controlling these phenomena and the mechanisms of plant environmental sensing through basic research using genetic modification and genome editing. Recently, research on the molecular mechanisms involved in plant water sensing has revealed that osmotic sensing proteins, which are activated when plants are dry, are also involved in the regulation of flood responses. We are currently working on analyzing the genes that are regulated downstream of this process.

Aircraft engines implement multiple safety measures to prevent accidents in advance. In particular, the measurement of turbine blade vibrations is crucial for preventing blade damage, maintaining quality, and ensuring safe operations. Aircraft engines, which require maximum safety like airplanes, need to measure the vibrations of all internal blades. Our VibroMap1000 can measure not only at a single point in a non-contact manner and in a short time but also across the entire surface. Typically, for large structures, multiple accelerometer pickups are installed to perform modal analysis; however, the slight weight of the accelerometer pickups can change the vibration modes themselves. In high-frequency vibration mode analysis, such as that of turbine blades, it is difficult to measure with only a limited number of accelerometer pickups. The VibroMap1000 utilizes speckle interferometry and a CCD camera to irradiate the entire measurement surface with laser light, allowing for real-time measurement of the vibration state, which is extremely useful for reducing measurement and maintenance time.

The EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction) method obtains orientation information of individual crystals from the electron diffraction patterns generated by electron beam irradiation and maps this information. It is a technique used to investigate not only crystal orientation (texture) but also material microstructural states such as grain distribution and stress-strain as quantitative and statistical data. For example, when the sample is tilted significantly in a SEM and the electron beam is irradiated, if the sample is crystalline, electron diffraction occurs within the sample. By indexing the resulting pattern, it becomes possible to determine the crystal orientation at that point.
