Evaluation of impurity diffusion from the high concentration layer to the lower layer membrane.

Introducing backside SIMS analysis conducted from the substrate side!

In SIMS analysis, when evaluating the diffusion of impurities from a high-concentration layer to a lower layer film, the effects of surface roughness and sputter etching may influence the crater edge effect and knock-on effects from the high-concentration layer. A method of evaluation that is not affected by these influences is Backside SIMS, which conducts SIMS analysis from the substrate side. In the attached PDF document, we introduce the evaluation of the diffusion distribution of F from a SiO2 film (FSG film) to a lower SiO2 film using Backside SIMS, so please take a look. 【Principle of Backside SIMS】 - By polishing the backside of the Si substrate to thin it, we can approach from the backside. - It is possible to control the remaining thickness of the Si substrate to create a thin film, to thin specific areas of patterned samples, or to selectively stop the etching of Si layers such as SiO2. In cases where there are layers that can stop etching, it is also possible to completely remove the Si substrate portion by wet etching. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Impurity analysis of GaN gate oxide film

Successfully captured impurity diffusion from the upper side of the gate oxide film using D-SIMS!

In GaN devices, the diffusion of components (impurities) originating from the pre-process of the gate oxide film leads to insulation failures, making it necessary to identify their concentration distribution and diffusion sources. We have developed a technology that provides high flatness to the surface of thin-film processed GaN compounds. As a result, we successfully captured the diffusion of impurities from the upper side of the gate oxide film using D-SIMS. *For detailed information, please refer to the attached PDF document. Nitrogen concentration analysis of SiC n-buffer layer

Successfully captured the n-buffer layer thickness and nitrogen (N) concentration using D-SIMS!

In recent years, in SiC MOSFETs, an n-buffer layer on the order of several hundred nanometers has been inserted between the n-substrate and the n-drift layer to address on-resistance issues. In the evaluation of the n-buffer layer, it is necessary to thin the n-drift layer, which is positioned above and is on the order of several micrometers, to improve depth direction resolution and to flatten its surface. We have developed a technology that provides high flatness to the surface of SiC compounds processed as thin films. As a result, we successfully captured the thickness and nitrogen (N) concentration of the n-buffer layer using D-SIMS. *For detailed information, please refer to the attached PDF document. To think of the Earth as a whole and aim for a good life.

Keywords: stone materials, weathering, deterioration, environment, earth resources, salt damage

To aim for a good life while protecting the environment and coexisting with nature, we must first understand the Earth we live on. Since childhood, I have loved nature, including mountains, rivers, and forests, and I learned about the energy of the Earth and the beauty of nature, which led me to study Earth sciences. Currently, I conduct research that applies geomorphology and petrology as a foundation to civil engineering, architecture, and cultural heritage preservation. Many large structures built for religious purposes or to demonstrate power have been designated as World Heritage Sites or cultural properties. Terms like civil engineering heritage and geological heritage have now become established. However, as time passes, these heritages undergo weathering and deterioration, necessitating preservation and restoration. In such cases, it is essential to first understand the original materials and use the same materials; if that is not possible, alternative materials must be employed. Additionally, the development of durable materials is necessary. I analyze the properties of rocks and the state of weathering and deterioration using various methods, while also investigating their relationship with the surrounding environment.

Realization of smooth motion of machines through lubrication technology.

Keywords: Tribology, friction, lubrication, dynamics, vibration, functional materials

We are engaged in research aimed at achieving smooth motion of machine moving parts to contribute to the high efficiency (energy saving) and improved quietness of machines. To enhance machine efficiency, we have developed an experimental device that utilizes optical interference to measure the oil film thickness formed between contact surfaces with a resolution of 0.1 nm (the length of a single molecule of fatty acid additive is about 2 nm), in order to reduce friction losses in moving parts. This supports the creation of lubrication systems using new materials and the development of new lubricants. Additionally, to improve the quietness of machines, we have established a vibration control design method focusing on the magnitude and direction of frictional forces to suppress vibrations and noise generated by friction, and we are considering its application to automotive-related machine components where the demand for quietness is increasing.

Analysis of degradation products in lithium-ion batteries using IC-MS.

[Case Study] Identification of Degradation Byproduct Ion Species

Lithium-ion batteries (LiB) are important components in electric vehicles (EV) and many electronic devices. Their quality directly affects the performance of EVs and other devices. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the degradation products of LiB anodes. By combining ion chromatography (IC) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), we performed identification and structural analysis of the degradation products. The analysis utilized an IC system and a quadrupole mass spectrometer to collect high-resolution full scan MS and data-dependent MS/MS data of the degradation products, followed by component extraction and database searches. Component extraction was performed using software, and structural identification was conducted using a database. As a result, we successfully identified the degradation products and analyzed their structures, yielding new insights that contribute to the improvement of LiB performance. In particular, the use of HRMS data enabled clear identification of ion species of unknown degradation products, demonstrating significant contributions to quality control and performance enhancement of LiB. This research deepens the understanding of the degradation mechanisms of LiB and represents an important step toward future improvements in battery performance. For more details, please refer to the PDF.
