By measuring the molecular weight of chemical substances with sufficient accuracy, it is possible to determine the elemental composition and identify the chemical structure of the substance using isotope ratios and fragmentation patterns. Using high-resolution GCMS allows for the reliable detection of target components from complex matrices due to its high mass resolution and mass accuracy. This technical document introduces a method for reliably identifying unknown substances almost instantaneously. It connects a direct injection probe to our high-resolution GCMS (Orbitrap GC-MS system) and rapidly identifies compounds using both electron ionization and chemical ionization.
