Tension spring with a narrowed round hook

Are you having trouble with broken springs in your production equipment or lines?

The hook shape in the photo is called a "shutter round hook." The hook is formed with a wire diameter thicker than the body, and it is incorporated into the body with a stop-off process. This hook shape is particularly strong against breakage and deformation. This spring is a breakage countermeasure product designed and prototyped by our company at the request of a customer. We received a consultation regarding "springs breaking in production equipment and lines" and redesigned it with improved specifications. We have enhanced durability without changing the force applied (load) when pulled. Our company addresses spring troubles such as breakage and sagging. If you send us broken samples, we will propose countermeasures and, if desired, we can also produce improved prototypes. Our technical staff will respond carefully, so please feel free to consult with us. Tsurugaoka Spring Co., Ltd. Compression spring, phosphor bronze wire C5191 Φ0.23, return spring.

By lowering the spring constant, it becomes easier to manage the load at the specified height.

The material is "phosphor bronze wire C5191W," and the wire diameter is Φ0.23. This is a return spring used in solenoid valves. "Phosphor bronze wire C5191" has a lower elastic modulus compared to other spring materials like piano wire, which allows for a lower spring constant. A lower spring constant helps to reduce load fluctuations caused by variations in free length, making it easier to manage the load at the specified height. After spring forming, heat treatment is applied. Heat treatment increases the hardness of phosphor bronze wire and enhances its spring properties (this is called low-temperature annealing hardening). If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Our technical staff will respond carefully. Torsion spring design - prototyping - moment calculation - opening and closing spring

We will quantify the balance of "just the right feeling" in the form of a moment.

This is a torsion coil spring designed and prototyped by our company in response to the customer's request. The purpose is to assist the opening and closing of a certain product's door using the spring's force. To quantify the appropriate force for opening and closing it "just right," we visited the site several times. Given the need for corrosion resistance and a certain level of heat resistance, we chose the material as "spring stainless steel wire SUS304-WPB." The designed spring can be realized in a short delivery time. (This product was also delivered in about a week.) The ability to provide prototypes with a short lead time is one of the advantages we offer. Our company handles the design and prototyping of torsion springs. If you provide us with the general conditions, we will propose the optimal specifications. It is also fine if you do not have any drawings. Our technical staff will respond carefully, so please feel free to consult with us. Tension spring, narrowed round hook, damage and breakage prevention measures.

The round hook is a hook shape that is resistant to breaking and deformation.

The spring in the photo is a breakage prevention product designed and prototyped by our company. It features a structure where a hook with a stop processing is incorporated into the body, referred to as a "drawn round hook" according to JIS standards. This hook shape is resistant to issues such as breaking and deformation. With a "drawn round hook," the body and hook can be designed separately. This allows for an increase in the strength of the hook without changing the spring's force (spring constant or load), making it an effective means when designing springs to be less prone to breaking. While not as strong as the "drawn round hook," the "round hook (large bend radius)" is also a hook shape that is resistant to breaking and deformation. From a cost perspective, the "round hook (large bend radius)" is advantageous, so I believe it is worth considering as well. For more information on round hooks, please refer to the related links. If you are experiencing troubles with springs, such as breakage or deformation, please feel free to consult us. If you send us broken samples, we will propose improvement measures. Corner spring manufacturing, design - prototype corner wire springs

When a large force is required in a limited space, corner springs using angle steel are effective.

We manufacture and design corner springs using square wire, from design to prototyping. When a large force is required in a limited space with restricted inner/outer diameters, corner springs made from square wire are effective. The advantage of using square wire is that it allows for a larger cross-sectional area of the material compared to round wire. (The larger the cross-sectional area, the greater the force the spring can exert.) The materials are generally custom-made, but we have a certain amount of stock available in-house. If we have materials on hand that approximate the required dimensions, we can quickly produce prototypes and other items. We can accommodate both iron-based spring materials (SWP-A, SW-C) and stainless steel spring materials (SUS304-WPB). If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Our technical staff will respond carefully. Tsurugaoka Spring Co., Ltd. Technical Contact: Ujiie Phone: 0235-22-0407 FAX: 0235-22-0546 Email: web@tohj.com

Twisted spring lever return spring SWP-AΦ2.6

For tension springs with hook processing and torsion springs with arm bending processing, we recommend using type A (SWP-A) for better workability.

The material used is "Piano Wire Type A (SWP-A)." There are mainly "Type A" and "Type B" piano wires, but for tension springs with hook processing or torsion springs with arm bending processing, we recommend using Type A (SWP-A) for better workability. After spring forming, heat treatment is performed, and trivalent chromate plating is applied as a rust prevention treatment. If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Tension Spring SWP-AΦ1.0

By leaving a gap and performing the winding process, the initial tension becomes zero.

The material used is "Piano Wire Type A, SWP-A." The body part is intentionally wound with gaps. This aims to eliminate the effects of initial tension and stabilize the load. If the spring body is wound without gaps, a force arises that causes the wires to try to adhere to each other, known as initial tension. Initial tension cannot avoid a certain degree of variation, which also affects load variation. By creating gaps in the body, as in this spring, the initial tension becomes zero. Although winding with gaps introduces variation in free length, if the amount of deflection that absorbs this variation can be secured, it is a method that allows for precise load management. If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Our technical staff will respond carefully. Tension Spring SWP-AΦ2.3 Clutch Spring

Spring forming using a multi-forming machine, including hook processing.

The material used is "Piano Wire Type A, SWP-A." Including hook processing, the springs are formed using a multi-forming machine. The hook shape of this spring is a "U hook." It is a representative hook shape alongside the "reverse round hook" and "round hook." Special care is taken in processing the hook part of tension springs. Stress (load) tends to concentrate on the hook part, and even a slight scratch can lead to problems such as breakage or deformation. To prevent the occurrence and outflow of scratches, we perform double checks using tool wrapping and magnifying glasses. The rust prevention treatment consists of trivalent black chromate plating plus hydrogen embrittlement removal. If you have any issues with "springs," please feel free to consult us. Design and selection of tension springs.

If you are unsure about which specifications of tension springs to choose, please leave it to us.

The load calculation for tension springs is somewhat complex, involving an unfamiliar force called "initial tension." Additionally, lifespan calculations differ from those for compression springs, as they must also consider the durability of the hook section, making this process complex as well. If you have any concerns, please feel free to consult with us. If you provide us with general conditions, we will design the tension spring for you. Of course, if there are any issues with the tension spring you are currently using, we can also redesign it for you. If you are unsure about which specifications to choose for a tension spring, you can leave it to us. It's okay if you don't have any drawings. Our technical staff will respond carefully, so please feel free to consult with us. Compression spring SUS316-WPAΦ0.25 plunger spring

The variation in load is almost proportional to the variation in free length, so free length control with sensors is effective.

This is a spring used in the plunger reciprocating mechanism of a solenoid valve. The material used is "spring stainless steel wire SUS316-WPA." It has superior corrosion resistance compared to the general-purpose spring material SUS304-WPB and is a non-magnetic material. This spring is processed through coiling while inspecting and adjusting the free length with a sensor called "kenchouki" to suppress variations in the mounting load. The variation in the mounting load is almost proportional to the variation in the free length, making control with the same sensor effective. Twisted spring SUS316-WPAΦ0.14 return spring

The small spring is used to measure and manage dimensions and angles with a projector.

The material used is "spring stainless steel wire SUS316-WPA." The common spring material SUS is "SUS304-WPB," but when greater corrosion resistance is required or low magnetism is desired, "SUS316-WPA" is used. This spring is formed using a multi-forming machine. The wire diameter is Φ0.14mm, and since it is a very small spring, dimensions and angles are measured and managed using a projector instead of calipers. Compression spring SWP-AΦ5.0 valve spring

Shot peening improves the durability of springs.

The material used is "Piano Wire Type A, SWP-A." The wire thickness is Φ5.0. After forming the spring with a heart gold type winding machine, it undergoes heat treatment (low-temperature annealing) and shot peening. Shot peening is a process that projects countless small steel balls onto the surface of the spring. This treatment improves durability by modifying the surface of the material. Using a spring load testing machine, we output data on the mounting load, maximum load, and spring constant, and we will provide an inspection report upon delivery. Garter spring, close-contact spring, SUS631-WPC Φ0.4

This is a garter spring used for reinforcing the seal part.

It may look like just a ring, but in fact, it is constructed by twisting the ends of a thin spring that is tightly coiled, joining them together to form a complete loop. During the twisting process, care is taken to ensure that no twisting occurs throughout the entire ring. The entire ring can stretch and contract like a rubber band, making it useful as a reinforcing spring for the sealing part. The material used is "spring stainless steel wire, SUS631-WPC." This stainless steel spring material is used when greater strength and heat resistance are required compared to the general-purpose "SUS304-WPB." To achieve the specified strength, a heat treatment known as precipitation hardening (also called aging treatment) is applied after the spring is formed. For springs of the same shape, there are processing achievements using non-magnetic and corrosion-resistant "SUS316-WPA" and iron-based spring materials such as "piano wire" and "hard steel wire." If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Our technical staff will respond carefully. Tsuruoka Spring Co., Ltd. Wave spring SUS304-WPBΦ0.8 retaining spring

It is used to hold the workpiece in a space-saving manner with a flat wave-shaped spring.

This is a space-saving spring used to secure work in narrow gaps. It is formed flat in a wave shape rather than in a coil shape. The material used is "spring stainless steel wire SUS316-WPA," which has better corrosion resistance than "SUS304-WPB" and is commonly used for springs in food factories and chemical plants. After spring forming, heat treatment (low-temperature annealing) is applied to relieve stress. Springs of the same shape have been processed using "piano wire (SWP-A, SWP-B)," "hard steel wire (SW-C)," and "phosphor bronze wire (C5191W)." Spring load: static load and dynamic load

The loads applied to a spring can be broadly divided into two types: static loads and dynamic loads.

◎ Static Load The following cases apply: 1) During the use of the spring, there is no fluctuation in load (a constant load is applied). 2) There is fluctuation in load, but the number of repetitions is approximately 1,000 times or less over its lifetime. ◎ Dynamic Load Also referred to as repeated load, most springs fall into this category. The methods for evaluating the durability of springs also differ for each case. In the case of static load, the evaluation criterion is whether the material undergoes plastic deformation. The idea is that it is acceptable as long as there is no "settling" in the spring. For dynamic load, it is natural that there is no settling, and the evaluation is based on how many cycles the spring can endure before fatigue failure occurs. By the way, enduring 10 million cycles is considered equivalent to having a semi-permanent durability. The "fatigue" of metals refers to the progression of micro-cracks due to repeated loading. Typically, it does not involve plastic deformation, making it a very troublesome phenomenon that can lead to sudden failure without any prior signs of settling or deformation. This concludes a rough explanation of static and dynamic loads and their evaluation methods. If you have any points that were insufficiently explained or any questions, please feel free to contact us by phone or email.

Heat treatment of springs, low-temperature annealing, bluing.

After spring forming, heat treatment must be performed to remove residual stress.

When processing spring materials, residual stress occurs within the material. If this residual stress is left untreated, the spring will attempt to return to its original shape, resulting in deformation over time. To avoid this phenomenon (springback), stress relief heat treatment is always performed after spring forming. Higher heat treatment temperatures are more effective at removing residual stress. However, spring materials have the characteristic that their strength decreases sharply when exposed to temperatures exceeding 450 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the stress relief heat treatment for springs is conducted at relatively low temperatures ranging from 200 to 450 degrees Celsius. This heat treatment is referred to as "low-temperature annealing." (In our spring manufacturing field, we call it tempering.) Materials such as piano wire, which are iron-based, develop a layer of iron oxide on the surface due to low-temperature annealing, and the color changes from brown to deep blue (as shown in the photo) as the heat treatment temperature increases. Because of this blue coloration, low-temperature annealing is sometimes referred to as bluing treatment. However, in the case of stainless steel, there is not much color change even after heat treatment, so the term "bluing" does not seem appropriate as a description for heat treatment of springs in general.

Twisted spring, phosphor bronze wire, C5191, Φ1.4

Bronze wire develops "springiness" through heat treatment.

Material: Phosphor bronze wire, C5191W Wire diameter: Φ1.4 Springs are sometimes required to have properties such as non-magnetism, electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance. It is often difficult to satisfy these properties with iron-based or stainless steel spring materials, so copper alloys are chosen. The most commonly used material for coil springs is "phosphor bronze wire." Phosphor bronze wire exhibits "springiness" only after heat treatment, so it must undergo heat treatment after forming. The heat treatment temperature is around 250 degrees and is referred to as low-temperature annealing. (For more information on phosphor bronze wire, please refer to the related links.) Non-uniform pitch spring, nonlinear characteristic spring

To obtain a nonlinear spring constant, a coil spring with uneven pitch is effective.

To obtain a nonlinear spring constant, a coil spring with an uneven pitch, like the one in the photo, is effective. When deflection is applied to this spring, the narrower pitch section on the right side first makes contact. As a result, the apparent effective number of coils in the entire spring decreases, increasing the spring constant and significantly raising the load. The spring constant takes on a shape similar to a broken line graph. Springs with a nonlinear spring constant include not only uneven pitch springs but also conical springs. The spring constant of these springs gradually increases with increasing deflection, resulting in a curved shape. If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Our technical staff will respond carefully. Technical contact: Ujiie Phone: 0235-22-0407 FAX: 0235-22-0546 Email: web@tohj.com Tsuruoka Spring Co., Ltd. We also support web conferencing.
