**Lecture Summary** The number of tropical nights in Tokyo has been increasing since around the end of World War II. The cause is said to be the heat island phenomenon, and it has become urgent to reduce heat radiation from the surface and buildings. Methods to mitigate the high temperatures of the surface include using primarily evapotranspiration through greening and reducing solar radiation absorption on surfaces, such as with heat-reflective paints. These technologies are referred to as cool roofs. In this lecture, I will discuss the heat island phenomenon mitigation effects of heat-reflective paints, their solar radiation shielding effects, and methods for performance verification based on previous research.
