It is native to Indonesia and called Cabe Puyung, and is a spice that is generally preferred over black pepper. As a traditional health food known as Jamu, it is used for conditions such as impotence, fever, high blood pressure, fatigue, abdominal pain, beriberi, influenza, lethargy, and neurasthenia (according to the Medical Herb Index in Indonesia, PT Eisai Indonesia, 1986).
