We provide thermal spraying technology (coating technology) adopted in rockets!

The thermal spraying technology adopted in the 1971 M-4S rocket "Tansei" enables the enhancement of functions in advanced machinery and the realization of free maintenance!

Nihon Coating Industry, established in 1961, is a professional group specializing in ceramic thermal spraying and surface treatment processing. Its high-level technology has been recognized, and in 1971, its thermal spraying technology was adopted for the M-4S rocket "Tansei," supporting advanced industries with ceramic technology for many years. No matter how excellent the coating itself is, if the surface shape is not finished according to the design, the expected performance cannot be achieved. We also flexibly respond to pre-treatments such as blasting and machining, as well as post-treatments like sealing. We offer proposals for high value-added technologies beyond thermal spraying. To provide our customers with high-quality thermal spraying technology accumulated over the years, we propose a consistent system from planning to spraying, delivery, and aftercare. We specialize in small-lot, diverse ceramic thermal spraying processing and can flexibly respond to proposals from the planning stage.

Introducing a coating that revitalizes rotary joints!

We would like to introduce a coating that has been revitalized for the rotary joint as a wear prevention measure for the lip seal area!

A lip seal (also known as an oil seal) is a sealing component primarily used to prevent oil and grease from leaking through gaps in rotating shafts or reciprocating shafts. The lip seal wears down due to external environmental factors such as the degradation of lubricating oil, the effects of moisture and chemicals, as well as lubrication and temperature factors. Here, we introduce a case where ceramic thermal spraying was used to solve such wear issues. ■Challenge We want to implement measures against wear in the lip seal area. ■Proposal We propose coating with a compatible ceramic to extend its lifespan. ■Effect The durability increased to more than twice that of conventional seals, which was greatly appreciated.

Introducing coating examples of film SCR and WC!

Introducing a case where the issue of eliminating transfer to the film due to scratches on the roll surface and improving wear resistance for long-term use was solved with coating!

In the film sheet stretching process, even minor scratches on the roll surface are not permitted. Therefore, the "polishing" of the surface of the stretching roll becomes very important, and a high hardness that makes it difficult to scratch is required. We will introduce a case where our ceramic thermal spraying has solved this problem by improving wear resistance, reducing the transfer of scratches on the roll surface to the film, and enhancing release properties. ■Challenge To eliminate the transfer of scratches from the roll surface to the film and further improve wear resistance for longer usage. ■Proposal To improve wear resistance with a high hardness coating from ceramic thermal spraying, provide surface roughness polishing (from sub-mirror to super mirror) using NCI's unique finishing technology, and since recoating is possible after use, we proposed that we can finish and provide a reproducible surface roughness multiple times. ■Effect The lifespan was extended, the repair cycle became longer, maintenance costs were significantly reduced, and it contributed to increased productivity, which was greatly appreciated.

Explanation of thermal spraying terminology

This is an explanation of thermal spraying terminology.

Alumina (aluminum oxide) is an oxide of aluminum. Abradable spraying is a thermal spraying process conducted to obtain a coating with a property that allows it to be easily abraded. An example of application includes spraying onto the inner wall of a case relative to turbine rotor blades to optimize the gap between the rotor blades and the case. Abrasive wear is a form of wear primarily caused by the cutting action of hard particles interposed between the uneven surfaces or gaps of contact surfaces. Electric arc spraying is a thermal spraying method that generates an arc between two linear metal spraying materials, and the metal droplets produced by the heat are atomized and accelerated by a jet of compressed air to form a coating on the substrate. Yttria (yttrium oxide) is an oxide of yttrium. *For more details, please download the PDF or contact us.*

Self-fluxing alloy thermal spray material

The materials that can be sprayed by NCI are not limited to ceramics.

The materials that can be thermally sprayed by NCI are not limited to ceramics. For example, self-fluxing alloys. These are nickel or cobalt-based alloys containing more than 1.5% boron and silicon, which are re-melted in an atmosphere of about 1100°C after being thermally sprayed to create an alloy layer that forms a dense, pore-free coating that adheres to the base material. They are characterized by excellent wear resistance. For more details, please download the catalog.

It is rich in heat resistance, chemical resistance, wear resistance, and electrical insulation, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Additionally, zirconia is the main player in heat-resistant coatings due to its thermal expansion rate being close to that of metals. Recently, its latent functionalities, such as ion characteristics, have attracted attention in future-oriented fields, including fuel cells. [Features] - Alumina has a hardness second only to diamond, with a melting point of 2,050 degrees. - Zirconia is the main player in heat-resistant coatings due to its thermal expansion rate being close to that of metals. - Chromia forms the most dense thermal spray coating. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Release coating

It is possible to perform treatments that do not adhere even with adhesive tape. The high release properties are also beneficial for mold processing.

In the manufacturing process of resin-based products such as films, the fineness and characteristics of the roll surface are crucial for product quality. Of course, the synergistic effect with the finishing polishing treatment is also significant, but certain types of ceramics have very high release properties against plastics and molten glass, and when sprayed, they can meet quite stringent requirements for scratch resistance and surface roughness. In extreme cases, it is even possible to treat surfaces so that adhesive tape does not stick. The high release properties are also beneficial for mold processing.
