The Discovery Core Rheometer is the first system to provide extensive measurements of viscosity and viscoelasticity with simple operability. New feature: The RheoGuide user interface allows operation from a touchscreen, providing guidance, visualization, and verification at each step. 【Discover Insights Beyond Viscosity】 Viscometers only report a single viscosity value within a limited range, while the Core Rheometer captures a complete viscosity profile, representing material behavior under all relevant conditions. Complex fluids such as suspensions, emulsions, gels, pastes, and slurries are non-Newtonian fluids, and their viscosity changes depending on the applied shear rate and time. Characterizing the full range of viscosity is crucial for understanding flow behavior under real-world conditions. Free membership registrationPowder materials are used in various fields such as polymers, pharmaceuticals, and battery materials. In addition to general physical properties like particle size and density, these powders can take various forms such as storage, flow, and agglomeration, making it necessary to evaluate their physical properties while considering the environment in which they will be used. To effectively evaluate these physical properties with high precision and convenience, a new powder accessory for HR rheometers was launched in 2022. In this instance, we will focus on "graphite for batteries" and present a case study of powder rheology analysis.

Free membership registrationThe DIL 806 optical dilatometer is a high-performance thermal expansion and contraction measurement device provided by TA Instruments. By adopting optical measurement principles, this device enables non-contact measurements that were difficult with conventional dilatometers. The DIL 806 uses an absolute measurement process that is not affected by the expansion or contraction of the testing apparatus itself, eliminating the need to correct measurement results for different temperature programs. This device irradiates a wide planar light onto the sample using high-performance LEDs and detects the shadow of the sample with a high-resolution CCD sensor. A digital edge detection processor evaluates this signal, accurately and sensitively measuring the dimensional changes of the sample in response to temperature variations. The DIL 806 is ideal for measuring materials such as metals and plastics, and thin samples can be easily analyzed using a dedicated sample holder. The furnace allows for rapid heating up to 100°C/min and rapid cooling from 1400°C to 50°C in under 10 minutes. This enables efficient analysis of dynamic processes and tests that include multiple temperature steps.

Free membership registrationThe DSC measurements conducted with microscope accessories provide insights through multiple applications to better understand the properties and behaviors of materials. It is possible to capture images related to crystallization and melting transitions, flow of materials above the glass transition and melting points, phase transitions, and volume dimensional changes associated with evaporation and sublimation. Visual observation of color changes and other appearance alterations is used in combination with DSC data to gain a deeper understanding of the material being analyzed.

Free membership registrationThe calorimetry measurement device (TAM series) is an instrument known as a microcalorimeter that measures very small amounts of heat. By combining a thermostat with high isothermal performance with a calorimeter (calorimeter) suited to the sample and measurement method, it is possible to measure minute heat generated or consumed during physical processes or chemical reactions with sensitivity exceeding microwatts. It is a useful tool that can contribute to the research and development of biofuels and environmental improvement, allowing real-time calorimetry measurements while performing operations such as the addition, mixing, and titration of chemicals through module combinations. This document provides a detailed explanation of high-sensitivity calorimetry measurements of biofuels, which are difficult to observe with conventional differential scanning calorimeters (DSC), as well as real-time measurements of heat changes associated with chemical reactions. ◇ Quantification of wax based on the heat of solidification reactions ◇ Evaluation of the production rate of biofuels *Please download the document.

Free membership registration◆Vibration Absorption and Viscoelastic Properties of Polyolefin-based Materials Materials with vibration absorption properties are attracting attention as they enable improvements in labor and living environments through soundproofing and vibration isolation. It is believed that vibration absorption occurs due to energy loss associated with internal friction in the material, and the amount of energy loss is known to correlate with the material's viscoelastic properties. By conducting viscoelastic measurements of the material, information regarding vibration absorption can be obtained. ◆Measurement and Control of Residual Solvent Levels in Wire Coating Processes Insulated wires used in discrete wiring circuit boards can cause various product defects (blisters, delamination, etc.) due to residual solvents present in the wire coating material. However, by utilizing thermal analysis techniques for the detection and quantification of residual solvents, it is possible to implement high-precision quality control.

Free membership registrationAs the industrial sector has begun to focus more on developing and manufacturing environmentally friendly products, various new biodegradable polymers have been adopted. Poly(Lactic Acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable aliphatic polyester produced from lactic acid obtained through the saccharification and fermentation of starch. Due to its high mechanical strength comparable to PETE and good biocompatibility, PLA has been commonly used in biomedical applications such as sutures and stents, but the expansion of PLA's applications is being considered. Understanding the properties of PLA is essential for the development of new applications. We present materials that investigate the thermal and mechanical properties of PLA-based beverage cups using temperature-modulated DSC and DMA. *Please download the materials.

Free membership registrationCurrently, the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is a global issue. TA Instruments hopes to contribute, even in a small way, to addressing the challenges posed by COVID-19 by introducing examples of virus research conducted by universities and research institutions using TA equipment. Research institutions that incorporate studies using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) to understand the structure and mechanisms of viruses are rapidly advancing. Please take a look at the examples.
