[Case Study] HGV GPS Automatic Toll Collection System
Using Gigabit Ethernet! Introducing a case study of the GPS automatic toll collection system on French roads.
An environmental tax has been established by the French transportation authorities for all HGVs (heavy goods vehicles) operating on the national road network, which spans over 1,500 km. The HGV tax for each vehicle is determined through an onboard GPS device, and for HGVs that do not comply with this new tax policy, their license plates are captured by a system consisting of multiple sensors and cameras, enforcing toll payment. This system is used to count the number of vehicles, and additionally, it can identify vehicle types through contour mapping. When a violation is detected, an image of the license plate is sent to the control room, and the toll collection process is initiated.
