When this reagent is added to the mobile phase, ions of opposite charges attract each other to form neutral ion pairs, which suppresses the dissociation of the sample in the mobile phase. Additionally, since the ion pair reagents are bonded with various alkyl groups, the formed ion pairs become more lipophilic, resulting in increased retention on ODS packing materials.
