Free membership registrationPFAS refers to a group of compounds known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. They were not originally found in nature but were artificially developed in the 1940s. These substances demonstrate stability, such as heat resistance, water repellency, oil repellency, and flame retardancy, which has led to their widespread use in industrial applications like foam fire extinguishers at airports and military facilities, cooling solvents used in semiconductor manufacturing, and metal plating solutions, as well as in consumer products like non-stick frying pan coatings, water-repellent outdoor gear, and food packaging. They repel water and oil, are resistant to heat and chemicals, and do not absorb light. Because they are difficult to break down in the natural environment and tend to accumulate, they are referred to as "forever chemicals." *For more details, please refer to the related links. Free membership registrationWhen membranes are used for a long time, they gradually become clogged, leading to a decrease in permeate flow rate. Chemical cleaning with agents can restore the filtration performance of various clogged separation membranes (RO membranes, UF membranes, NF membranes, MF membranes). Cleaning can be performed regardless of the type of membrane, and repairs can also be made to the leak points of hollow fiber membranes. We will confirm and report the permeate flow rate and desalination performance before and after cleaning. 【Recommended for the following concerns】 ■ I want to try cleaning separation membranes. ■ I want to review costs because the current outsourcing costs are high. ■ I want to repair leak points. ■ Separation membranes clog up quickly. ■ The cost of blow cleaning new separation membranes is high. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationThere are various types of ion exchange resins, and to select the appropriate type, it is necessary to recognize their characteristics. One particularly important characteristic is called "selectivity," which can be described as the "preferences of the ions" for the ion exchange resin. Additionally, the ease of adsorption varies depending on the type of ion exchange resin and the type of ions it reacts with, with characteristics such as "ions with higher valence are easier to adsorb" and "for elements in the same group, ions with a larger atomic number are easier to adsorb." In this column, we will provide a detailed explanation with reference to the periodic table and the selectivity coefficients of cation exchange resins and anion exchange resins. *For more detailed content of the column, please refer to the related links. Free membership registrationAs an evaluation item for the performance of ion exchange resins, an important physical property alongside "ion exchange capacity" is "reaction rate." Generally, those with a large ion exchange capacity have a low reaction rate, while those with a small ion exchange capacity have a high reaction rate. Therefore, the priority of either characteristic depends on the application conditions. In this column, we introduce an example where a water solution is prepared in a beaker and ion exchange resin is added. *For detailed content of the column, please refer to the related links. Free membership registrationAn important item for evaluating the performance of ion exchange resins is "ion exchange capacity." The ion exchange capacity of standard cation exchange resins is about 2 equivalents per liter. The amount that can be adsorbed varies by element; for sodium ions, it is 46g per liter of cation exchange resin, for magnesium ions, it is 24g, and for cesium ions, it is 266g. In this column, we introduce topics such as "the relationship between the types of ion exchange resins and their exchange capacity" and "the measurement procedures for ion exchange capacity." [Overview] ■ Overview of ion exchange capacity ■ Pre-treatment of ion exchange capacity ■ Collection of ion exchange capacity ■ Measurement procedures for ion exchange capacity ■ Measurement of continuous flow exchange capacity *For detailed content of the column, please refer to the related links. Free membership registrationIon exchange resins are widely used in the production of pure water and wastewater treatment. They are plastic spheres with a diameter of about 0.7 mm, strong and stable objects that do not easily break even when pressed with a finger. Typically, they can be used for several years, but just as blue sheets and PVC pipes deteriorate, ion exchange resins also gradually degrade with age. This column explains topics such as "methods for evaluating physical strength" and "accelerated aging tests" using diagrams. When used for long periods, it is advisable to regularly sample and check the physical properties. [Overview] ■ Importance of physical strength ■ Methods for evaluating physical strength ■ Accelerated aging tests *For detailed content of the column, please refer to the related links. Free membership registrationIon exchange resins are spherical substances with a diameter of approximately 0.3 to 1.2 mm, and there are ion exchange resins with a wide range of particle size distributions known as "Gaussian distribution" and those with a nearly uniform particle size distribution called "uniform particle size distribution." These are used differently depending on their applications, but ion exchange resins with a uniform particle size distribution often have advantageous characteristics. In this column, we explain topics such as "differences in particle size distribution due to manufacturing methods" and "differential pressure characteristics (pressure loss)." [Overview] ■ Differences in particle size distribution due to manufacturing methods ■ Differences in characteristics based on particle size distribution ■ Differential pressure characteristics (pressure loss) ■ Backwashing expansion and separation characteristics ■ Swelling ratio *For detailed content of the column, please refer to the related links. Free membership registrationIon exchange resins are used to adsorb ions of impurities present in water through ion exchange reactions, thereby purifying the water. The capacity to adsorb these ions has its limits, but once the limit is reached, it can be reused by performing a "regeneration" operation using chemicals. This column explains "regeneration operations" and "regeneration characteristics" using diagrams. Cation exchange resins are regenerated using mineral acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, while anion exchange resins are regenerated using alkalis such as sodium hydroxide (caustic soda). Additionally, water softeners that use cation exchange resins are regenerated with a salt (sodium chloride) solution. Free membership registrationSelenium at a concentration of 0.4 ppm is present in the drainage generated from tunnel construction, and since construction cannot proceed unless the drainage is reduced to below the standard value of 0.1 ppm, we considered whether treatment using ion exchange resin could be implemented. Generally, the drainage generated from tunnel construction undergoes coagulation and sedimentation treatment; however, this requires a large equipment space and may lead to factors causing poor coagulation. Therefore, we sampled the actual drainage occurring at the site and conducted a liquid flow test using ion exchange resin at our lab. We confirmed the adsorption performance for selenium and demonstrated that treatment from 0.4 ppm to below 0.1 ppm is possible. [Issues with Coagulation and Sedimentation Treatment] ■ Removal of Selenium from Drainage - The concentration of selenium in the drainage generated from construction fluctuates, causing variations in the selenium concentration of the treated water from coagulation and sedimentation. - These fluctuations can also lead to variations in the amount of coagulant used, potentially resulting in poor coagulation. ■ Large equipment space required. *For more details, please refer to the related links or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationWe would like to introduce a case where manganese (Mn) in wastewater from a business was reduced to below the discharge standard using chelating resin for wastewater treatment. The company is engaged in industrial waste disposal and has already installed and is operating coagulation and sedimentation equipment; however, during certain seasons, the Mn concentration exceeded the discharge standard. The cause was identified as seasonal fluctuations in the industrial water used by the business, and improvements to the existing equipment or the addition of new equipment were being considered to resolve the issue. Generally, methods proposed by other companies are common, but due to the low treatment volume and the minimal presence of heavy metals other than Mn, a method using chelating resin was implemented. 【Overview】 ■Industry: Industrial waste disposal ■Area: Kanto region ■Source water type: Effluent from existing wastewater treatment equipment ■Treatment volume: 1m3/h ■Main technology: Chelating resin *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationWe would like to introduce a case of removing fluoride (F) and boron (B) from wastewater using ion exchange resin. In the cleaning process of a new product being manufactured at a facility, fluoride is generated, and we want to treat it to meet the sewer discharge standards. However, the chemicals used in the production contain hydrofluoric acid and boric acid, and after cleaning the products, the concentrations of fluoride and boron in the wastewater exceeded the standard values. Since the existing wastewater treatment facility could not accept this, it was a challenge to reduce the concentrations to the standard values before merging with the existing treatment facility. Therefore, Muromachi Chemical proposed "removal of fluoride and boron using a device with cartridges." 【Overview】 ■ Industry: Manufacturing ■ Area: Kanto region ■ Source water type: Cleaning wastewater from manufactured products ■ Treatment capacity: 0.1 m3/h ■ Main technology: Ion exchange resin *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Free membership registrationWe will introduce a case of drying and grinding ion exchange resin. The recurring challenge was the selection method for ion exchange resin, which serves as the material for developing new filters. Additionally, to use the ion exchange resin in filters, it needed to be dried and ground. Since we relied on outsourcing to companies capable of handling each process, manufacturing took longer, leading to increased material costs. By managing the entire process from application development to processing of ion exchange resin in-house, we were able to select suitable products from a wide range of ion exchange resins and perform the drying and grinding of the resin in the same factory, resulting in improved efficiency. Free membership registrationWe would like to introduce a case study confirming the effectiveness of treating Cu and Cd in on-site water using chelating resin. The facility was struggling with the desire to "lower and stabilize the values of Cu and Cd in the on-site water generated at the site," and the challenge was whether the chelating resin could achieve a lower and more stable treatment. Currently, the generated on-site water is stored in a reservoir, and treatment is performed by adding neutralizing agents and coagulants, but they were considering whether there might be a better treatment method. In response, Muromachi Chemical proposed "conducting actual treatment data acquisition using a testing machine on-site with chelating resin."
