What is the difference between hard chrome plating and decorative chrome plating? 【With video】

What is the difference between hard chrome plating and decorative chrome plating?

Q: What is the difference between hard chrome plating and decorative chrome plating? A: Decorative chrome plating generally uses nickel plating as a base and is aimed at improving appearance and corrosion resistance (e.g., car emblems). On the other hand, hard chrome plating, officially referred to as industrial chrome plating, involves applying a thick layer of chrome plating (over 1μm) to achieve hardness, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and release properties (e.g., hydraulic equipment cylinders).

Can the hardness of electroless nickel plating be increased?

Can you increase the hardness of electroless nickel plating with Silvec?

Q: Is it possible to increase the hardness of electroless nickel plating? A: Yes, it is possible. We perform heat treatment (by the supplier) after our electroless nickel plating to achieve the specified hardness (within the lower and upper limits). The Vickers hardness of our electroless nickel is approximately 550 Hv, and there are products that have been treated to over 900 Hv after heat treatment. While heat treatment may cause discoloration of the electroless nickel plating, it does not affect its functional properties such as hardness. If discoloration is absolutely unacceptable, vacuum heat treatment can prevent discoloration; however, we sincerely apologize that we are unable to accommodate this at our company.

Is electroless nickel plating lead-free?

Is Silvex's electroless nickel plating lead-free? 【 Electroless Nickel Plating 】

Q: Is electroless nickel plating lead-free? [Electroless Nickel Plating] A: Silvex's electroless nickel plating is lead-free. However, before the RoHS directive, lead was added to the electroless nickel plating solution to prevent decomposition. Currently, there are products that use lead as an additive and those that use substances other than lead. Therefore, not all electroless nickel plating is lead-free. If you require lead-free, you need to specify that.

What is "kanizen meki"? "Kanizen tokin"? "Kani zen meki"?

What is "Kanizen plating"? "Kanizen electroplating"? "Crab meal plating"? 【Electroless nickel plating】

Q: What is Kanizen plating? Is it Kanizen electroplating? What does it refer to? [Electroless nickel plating] A: It refers to electroless nickel plating. Kanigen is an abbreviation for C(K)atalytic (catalytic) Nickel (nickel) Generation (generation), and it is also the name of the Japanese company Kanigen, which was the first in Japan to establish electroless nickel plating. Therefore, Kanigen is recognized as a term that refers to electroless nickel plating in general. Silvec's electroless nickel plating is not from Kanigen, so if the customer does not specify Kanigen's solution, there are no quality issues, and we can fully accommodate their needs.

Does the amount of phosphorus (P) change the characteristics? High phosphorus, medium phosphorus, low phosphorus?

Does the characteristic of electroless nickel plating change with the amount of phosphorus (P)? High phosphorus, medium phosphorus, low phosphorus?

Q: Does the amount of phosphorus (P) change the characteristics? High phosphorus, medium phosphorus, low phosphorus?? A: Electroless nickel-phosphorus plating is often categorized based on the phosphorus ratio in the alloy: 2-7% is considered low phosphorus, 8-10% is medium phosphorus, and 11-15% is high phosphorus. The lower the phosphorus content, the closer the properties are to nickel metal, while a higher phosphorus content tends to increase corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and hardness. The electroless nickel plating on Silvex's mass production line is of the medium phosphorus type.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of zinc plating?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of zinc plating?

Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages of tin plating? A: The advantages of tin plating are: 1. Good solder wetting properties during soldering. 2. Being a soft metal, it can easily break through any oxide film due to sliding, exposing the tin metal. 3. Decorative properties due to its beautiful silver-white color. 4. It is a low-toxicity metal with good corrosion resistance and chemical resistance. The disadvantages are: 1. The occurrence of whiskers. 2. Over time, an oxide film can form on the plating surface, making it prone to a gray, non-lustrous appearance.

Please tell me about Whisca.

Please tell me about Whisca.

Q: Please tell me about whiskers. A: Whiskers refer to fine, wire-like metallic crystals that occur from tin plating and zinc plating. In electrical and electronic components, the growth of whiskers can cause short circuits, making their suppression a significant challenge. It is said that whiskers are particularly likely to occur in bright tin plating, but they can also occur in matte tin plating. The prevailing theory is that internal stress within the plating film during plating or in corrosive environments is the cause of whisker formation, but the exact mechanism of their generation remains unclear. To reduce the occurrence of whiskers in tin plating, methods such as alloy plating with reflow, silver, copper, and bismuth are being implemented, but complete suppression of whiskers has not yet been achieved.

What is the difference between electroplating and hot-dip galvanizing?

What is the difference between electroplating and hot-dip galvanizing?

Q: What is the difference between electroplating and hot-dip galvanizing? A: Electroplated zinc is a type of plating that uses electrical action to deposit metal dissolved in the plating solution onto the product. Hot-dip galvanizing involves immersing the product in molten zinc to adhere the metal to it. Since it is easier to achieve a thicker coating with hot-dip galvanizing, it is often applied to steel structures for corrosion protection against salt damage.

What are the minimum thickness, maximum thickness, and recommended thickness for solderable nickel plating?

Please tell me the minimum thickness, maximum thickness, and recommended thickness for solderable nickel plating.

Q: Please tell me the minimum thickness, maximum thickness, and recommended thickness for solderable nickel plating (electrolytic nickel plating for soldering). A: To achieve solder wetting properties equivalent to tin plating, a minimum of 3μm and a recommended thickness of 5μm is required. However, even if the thickness exceeds 5μm, the solder wetting properties remain "unchanged," so for barrel-plated solderable nickel, we specify a thickness of 3 to 6μm as per the drawings.
