Trivia: "What is plating?"

I will explain plating in an easy-to-understand way, as it can be difficult for unfamiliar people to visualize.

To put it simply, plating is a technology that involves applying a new metallic coating to the surface of a material, and it is widely used in our everyday lives. For example, tin plating is applied to tin plates for corrosion resistance, and zinc plating is applied to corrugated sheets. Gold plating is used for decorative purposes on trophies and medals, while copper and gold plating are applied to semiconductor components to provide conductivity. As such, there are various types of plating, each with different purposes and characteristics.

Trivia: "What are pits and pinholes?"

There is a defect in chrome plating known as pits and pinholes, which are holes that form in the plating film. I will explain these pits and pinholes.

Have you ever heard the terms "pit" and "pinhole"? Both refer to defects where holes form on the surface of a plating film, but what is the difference between them? First, a pit refers to a hole that does not reach the base material. In contrast, a pinhole refers to a hole that does reach the base material. Pits are less likely to lead to immediate corrosion, while pinholes allow corrosive factors to enter through the hole, increasing the risk of corrosion and rust formation in the base material. To explain it simply, this is how it works. Next, why do pits and pinholes occur? The causes can be broadly divided into two types: - Issues during plating, such as debris adhesion or hydrogen gas bubbles. - Defects in the material itself, such as holes or inclusions. The first type is largely influenced by the plating contractor's skills and the management of the plating solution, so choosing a good plating contractor can help reduce these issues. On the other hand, for material-related issues, it is important to select high-quality materials.

Trivia: "Why does chrome plating still rust?"

I will answer the question, "Why do parts and rolls that have been coated rust or corrode?"

This is due to the presence of micro-cracks, which are invisible cracks, on the chrome-plated surface. Micro-cracks are interconnected within the plating film, and tracing them can reveal connections from the surface to the base material. Therefore, when exposed to environments with high humidity and condensation or to environments with strong corrosive gases, corrosive factors can enter through the micro-cracks, leading to corrosion of the base material that has been chrome-plated. As a result, rust may appear on the surface of the item, or the chrome plating may start to lift due to corrosion, ultimately leading to peeling. As a countermeasure, when using rolls in corrosive environments, it is common to use stainless steel for the base material; however, for iron or aluminum, methods such as nickel + chrome plating or double plating are also available. Countermeasure 1: It is called nickel chrome. By applying nickel plating as a base layer and chrome plating on top of the nickel plating, corrosion caused by micro-cracks can be prevented. Countermeasure 2: This method involves processing the chrome plating in two layers. By separating the application of chrome plating into the first and second layers, the number of micro-cracks that reach the base material is reduced, which is expected to effectively prevent corrosion caused by micro-cracks.

Manufacturing of industrial crown rolls

We are capable of manufacturing and repairing crown rolls such as radial crowns, taper crowns, and reverse crowns (concave).

Surface treatment: Hard chrome plating Finishing: Buff polishing, mirror polishing ■ What is a crown roll? A crown roll is a roll whose central dimension is higher than the dimensions at its ends, finished in an arc shape, referred to as a radial crown, while those finished by connecting taper shapes are called taper crowns. Conversely, a roll with higher dimensions at its ends than at its center, opposite in shape to a crown roll, is called a reverse crown. ■ Applications In addition to preventing deflection and ensuring uniform nip, crown rolls are used for various purposes, including stretching film wrinkles. ■ Precision rolls and mirror finishes are also available. We can manufacture crown rolls with a precision of less than 3μ using high-precision grinding machines, as well as ultra-mirror crown rolls with a finish of less than 0.05S using mirror polishing machines. We also offer measurement of existing roll crown values, creation of backup rolls, and repair of crown rolls.

Trivia: "What is the difference between decorative chrome plating and industrial chrome plating?"

The difference between decorative chrome plating and industrial chrome plating can be simply described as a significant difference in their applications and the thickness of the coating.

Chrome plating has a beautiful shiny silver appearance and is a highly durable coating, with many chrome-plated products around us. Chrome plating is used in a wide variety of items, including faucets, accessories, and parts for cars, motorcycles, and bicycles—there are countless examples. However, chrome plating can be broadly divided into two categories: "decorative chrome plating" and "industrial chrome plating." The main purpose of decorative chrome plating is aesthetic appeal and corrosion resistance, typically applied at a thickness of about 0.1 to 0.5 μm. It is usually applied over a base layer of nickel plating or copper-nickel plating. Most of the chrome plating we encounter in our daily lives falls into this decorative category. On the other hand, the purpose of industrial chrome plating, in addition to corrosion resistance, includes wear resistance and scratch resistance, with thicknesses ranging from about 10 μm to as much as 200 μm. Utilizing the hardness and smoothness of chrome plating, it is widely used in sliding and moving parts such as cylinders, pistons, molds, rolls, and machine components. Since aesthetic appeal is not a primary concern, it is often applied directly to the material, especially when aiming to enhance corrosion resistance.

Teflon-impregnated micro-crack coating "Tef-Lock Fine"

Achieve maintenance of lubricity and improved load-bearing capacity and durability with micro-crack plating + PTFE!

We have a product called "Tef-Lock," which is our original plating that incorporates PTFE into hard chrome plating. This is a composite surface treatment that combines the high hardness and wear resistance of chrome plating with the low friction and lubrication properties of PTFE. However, in high-load environments where chrome plating may wear away, it has been difficult to maintain low friction and lubrication. However, we have developed "Tef-Lock Fine" by impregnating PTFE into our original Cro-Fine (high-hardness micro-crack chrome plating) coating, which solves these issues. 【Features】 ■ Hardness increased compared to conventional Tef-Lock (HV850 → HV900) ■ Increased crack density and higher PTFE content compared to conventional Tef-Lock ■ Maintains low friction under high loads and exhibits excellent wear resistance *For more details, please refer to the related links or feel free to contact us.

Micro crack plating "Clo-Fine" achieves high hardness and high corrosion resistance!

Further improve the hardness and corrosion resistance of hard chrome plating with micro-crack plating!

Typically, hard chrome plating is performed using a bath made of anhydrous chromic acid and sulfuric acid, referred to as a "Sargent bath," dissolved in water. Its hardness ranges from HV750 to 900, which is quite excellent, but even so, under harsh usage conditions, wear of the plating is unavoidable. Additionally, the cracks (fine fissures) present in the hard chrome plating layer can expand when heat is applied, which can be problematic depending on the application. However, our company has developed "CRO-FINE," which solves these issues by improving the components of the plating bath. 【Features】 ■ Hardness is excellent at HV950 to 1000 ■ Compared to typical hard chrome plating, the extent of crack expansion due to heating is smaller ■ Although there are many cracks, they are narrow and shallow, resulting in minimal penetration to the substrate and excellent corrosion resistance ■ Not only is it excellent in wear resistance, but it also reduces the wear amount of the opposing material *For more details, please refer to the related links or feel free to contact us.

Suppressing crack transfer and improving quality! "Super Mirror Crack-Free Roll"

Are you having trouble with cracks in the plating transferring onto the mirror-finished rolls for film molding? It can be improved with crack-free plating.

Hard chrome plating has excellent hardness with a hardness value of HV750 to 900, but it has the issue of cracks (fine fissures) in the coating, which means that no matter how much the surface is polished to a mirror finish, the cracks can transfer to the product. Our company has long had the technology for a non-crack chrome plating called "Cloamore." The hardness can reach up to HV1800 through heat treatment at temperatures between 200°C and 600°C, and due to being crack-free, it has excellent corrosion resistance. However, since the coating can only be applied as a thin film with a thickness of up to 5μ, it has not been applicable to mirror surface rolls until now. However, we have developed a "Super Mirror Crack-Free Roll" that solves these problems by forming a special two-layer structure. 【Features and Effects】 ■ Achieves a super mirror crack-free surface with a roughness of Ry0.05 or less. ■ Since Cloamore is on the outermost layer, it has a hardness of about HV1200, which is approximately 1.5 times that of hard chrome plating, making it less prone to scratches due to its excellent wear resistance. ■ Being crack-free enhances corrosion resistance and reduces resin accumulation on the roll surface. It is also expected to improve anti-fouling properties and non-contamination effects. *For more details, please feel free to contact us.

Trivia: "What is the difference between plating and painting?"

The materials and construction methods for plating and painting are completely different. Here is a simple explanation of the differences between plating, including hard chrome plating, and painting.

○ Plating This is a technique that forms a thin metal film on the surface of a material to prevent rust, improve appearance, or impart functionality. Plating can be broadly divided into wet plating and dry plating, with hard chrome plating classified as wet plating. Wet plating involves forming a film in a solution of dissolved metal and is further classified into electroplating, which uses a power source, and electroless plating, which does not. Dry plating, on the other hand, forms a film in a vacuum or similar environment and is called dry plating because it does not involve immersion in a solution. Dry plating is further divided into physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). ○ Painting, Coating This is a technique that forms a coating film by applying or spraying paint onto the surface of a material, with similar purposes as plating, such as preventing rust, improving appearance, and imparting functionality. Painting methods range from simple manual application using brushes to high-pressure spraying of paint, methods that heat and cure the paint, powder coating where powdered paint is electrostatically adhered and then heated to melt, and electrodeposition painting, where electricity is passed through a solution of dissolved paint to form a coating film.

High corrosion-resistant plating "Hybrid Chrome" (under prototype development)

We have successfully achieved high corrosion resistance that significantly exceeds 24 hours in the Cass test through the hybridization (composite) of plating films and inorganic materials!

Hybrid chrome is a technology that enhances the functional properties of chrome plating by hybridizing (compositing) chrome plating films with inorganic materials. Our company has successfully achieved corrosion resistance that significantly exceeds 24 hours in the Cass test through hybridization with glassy materials. By sealing the micro-cracks, which are a weakness of chrome plating, corrosion resistance has been greatly improved, and at the same time, it also prevents the intrusion of foreign substances into the cracks.

Double plating for improved corrosion resistance.

The multilayering of hard chrome plating improves corrosion resistance by reducing the penetration of microcracks. It is effective when you want to keep costs down.

Hard chrome plating is not only excellent in wear resistance but is also sometimes applied to protect the surface of iron from rust; however, its corrosion resistance is not perfect. This is due to the presence of microcracks, which are tiny cracks that are not visible to the naked eye, on the surface of the hard chrome plating. Some of these microcracks penetrate all the way from the surface to the base material. Therefore, while hard chrome plating does not corrode when exposed to humid environments that are prone to condensation or environments with strong corrosive gases, corrosion factors can reach the base material through the cracks, and once corrosion begins in the base material itself, it can ultimately lead to the plating peeling off from the base material. For this reason, there are cases where the use of chrome plating for rust prevention is abandoned due to the usage environment; however, there are actually methods to improve corrosion resistance. One such method is to create a multilayered hard chrome layer. By reapplying plating after the chrome plating finish, the number of microcracks that penetrate to the base material can be reduced, thereby enhancing corrosion resistance. Nickel plating is also a method to improve corrosion resistance, but it is not suitable for environments that corrode nickel, such as those with ozone; thus, the technology of multilayering chrome plating is adopted as a countermeasure.

Acquiring hardness above HV900 and wear resistance simultaneously [hard chrome plating].

By applying hard chrome plating to the surface without using expensive materials, excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and other functions can be achieved, making cost reduction possible. *Samples are currently available.

Hard chrome plating is a technique known as electroplating, which uses electrical power to reduce metal ions in a solution and form a new coating (chromium metal) on the surface of the material. This allows for functionality to be applied only to the necessary areas, enabling the use of materials with minimal required functions instead of expensive high-performance materials. By applying hard chrome plating to the surface, it is possible to fully utilize the functions while keeping material costs low. Additionally, we also offer a coating called "Tef-Lock," which incorporates Teflon for excellent release properties, and "Cloamore," which enhances hardness and achieves crack resistance by incorporating carbon into the chrome plating. *Currently, we are introducing processing solution case studies on Ipros! Please take a look. 【Features】 ★ Hardness With a high hardness of over Hv900, it is significantly harder than heat-treated steel and nitrided steel. ★ Wear Resistance As the hardness of the coating increases, the amount of wear decreases. ★ Heat Resistance Even when heated to over 400°C, the hardness does not rapidly decrease... *For more details, please feel free to contact us.

Hardness of Hv1000 even at 600℃! High heat-resistant plating "Cloamore".

This is an amorphous chrome plating that has improved heat resistance, which has been considered unsuitable for use at high temperatures.

It has an amorphous structure and possesses different characteristics from conventional crystalline coatings. Through heat treatment, its hardness can reach up to a maximum of Hv 1800, which is about twice that of hard chrome plating. While both chrome amorphous and hard chrome plating experience softening of hardness when used at high temperatures, chrome amorphous, which has reached its maximum hardness through heat treatment, can maintain a hardness of around Hv 1000 even when used at 600 degrees. Additionally, unlike chrome plating, which does not return to its original hardness after being used at high temperatures, chrome amorphous returns to its original hardness each time it cools to room temperature, making it suitable for use at high temperatures.

Case study of hard chrome plating application No. 3 [Plating on coating bars]

High-precision plating of thin films to maintain the groove shape of coating bars.

We received an inquiry from a film manufacturer who wanted to apply hard chrome plating to grooved bars as uniformly and accurately as possible. The primary requirement was the uniformity of the plating thickness. Variations in plating thickness directly lead to variations in the volume of the grooves, which in turn affects the amount of coating applied. After numerous prototypes, we successfully achieved hard chrome plating with a thin film of approximately 5 to 10 μm, maintaining a range of ±1 μm for 5 μm and ±2 μm for 10 μm. Regarding the type of grooves, we can accommodate both types: those made by rolling and those made by wrapping wire around a round bar. We were pleased to hear that we were able to maintain the wear resistance of hard chrome plating while preserving the groove shape, ensuring a stable coating amount and stabilizing quality.

Surface treatment: hydrophilic treatment chrome plating

This is a specification with improved hydrophilicity.

This treatment improves hydrophilicity by widening the microcracks in hard chrome plating. Compared to standard hard chrome plating, it has better water affinity. It is an ideal treatment for applications aimed at retaining lubricants and coating liquids. Widening the microcracks also carries the risk of accelerating corrosion compared to standard chrome plating, so please consult us first.

Case Study of Tephlock No. 3 [Prevention of Striations During Extrusion Molding]

Free samples available! Prevents streaks during extrusion molding with the lubricity of 'Tef-Lock'.

We received an inquiry from a manufacturer engaged in the extrusion molding of resin pipes, who reported that vertical stripes were inevitably appearing on the products when passing through the sizing process to cool and solidify the extruded pipes. While they had tried general Teflon coatings and other surface treatments containing Teflon to improve slip and release properties, they were somewhat satisfied with the hardness and wear resistance of hard chrome plating. However, they were looking for a surface treatment that would maintain hardness and wear resistance while providing a bit more lubrication and release properties. In response, we introduced our "Tef-Lock." Thanks to the excellent slip properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), we successfully eliminated the vertical stripes that were occurring during the sizing process. Additionally, the previous plating company they had used for hard chrome plating had caused significant bulging at the entrance edge, which was crucial for regulating the dimensions of the resin pipes and negatively affecting quality. They were pleased to find that our plating improved this issue as well.

Case study of hard chrome plating part 2: [Reduction of repair costs]

A case that was troubling due to high costs when requesting Company A through the manufacturer for a repair issue was resolved with "hard chrome plating"!

We would like to introduce a case where we were troubled by high costs while requesting repairs from Company A through the manufacturer. 【Issue】 We received a consultation from a certain manufacturer, who was having trouble with the costs incurred while requesting surface treatment repairs from Company A through the manufacturer. 【Proposal】 We proposed "hard chrome plating," which can be done directly without going through the manufacturer. 【Result】 By being able to do it directly, the costs were reduced, and the finish was problem-free, successfully reproducing the same treatment as Company A's surface processing.

Case study of hard chrome plating No. 1 [Tank of overseas products]

The issue of overseas products' tanks being prone to damage was resolved with "hard chrome plating"!

We would like to introduce a case where a tank made overseas was prone to damage, causing difficulties. [Issue] We received an inquiry from a manufacturer who needed a tank for mixing marble raw materials that required hardness. However, the overseas-made tank was easily scratched, and there were numerous scratches in areas where the plating had peeled off. [Proposal] The original overseas-made tank had a very thin hard chrome plating, and particularly near the junction of the inner diameter bottom and the inner diameter surface, there was almost no plating at all. Therefore, we proposed to apply our "hard chrome plating" more thickly. [Result] The hard chrome plating applied by another company had scratches after just one use, but after our delivery, the tank was used several times without any issues, and the customer was satisfied.

Case Study of Teflock No. 2 [Surface Treatment Ideal for Conveyance Guides]

[Free Sample Available] A case where delamination occurred after using a guide for transporting paper and other materials for three days has been resolved with "Teflock"!

We would like to present a case where a guide for transporting paper and other materials delaminated after three days of use. [Issue] A manufacturer consulted us about a guide for transporting paper that had previously used Teflon coating before processing with Teflock. However, it delaminated after just three days (with a lead time of two weeks), requiring them to apply adhesive tape each time as a workaround. [Proposal] We introduced our "Tef-Lock." [Result] The wear resistance was significantly improved, and what used to delaminate after three days now lasts over a year. It has a good compatibility with non-woven fabrics, offers superior durability compared to Teflon coating, and has reduced maintenance frequency, leading to customer satisfaction.

Case Study of Teflock Adoption No. 1 [Scratch Prevention in the Canning Line]

[Free Sample Available] Reduce friction resistance with "Tef-Lock" to prevent product scratches!

We would like to introduce a case where we prevented scratches on cans in the canning line. We received an inquiry from a can manufacturing machine manufacturer regarding a component called a forming flap, which transports and shapes cans just before the welding process. It was reported that scratches were occurring on the steel plates due to the resistance when passing through this component. While fluorine coating could improve sliding, it was also necessary to have wear resistance because the steel plates were sliding. In response, we introduced our "Tef-Lock." This reduced the friction resistance between the component and the steel plate, preventing scratches on the steel plate. Additionally, since it has hardness equivalent to hard chrome plating, the durability of the component itself was also significantly improved, which pleased our client.

[Free Sample Available] Functional Coating 'Cloarmore'

Are you looking for a surface treatment that has high hardness, corrosion resistance, and heat resistance to replace DLC?

Cromall is a chromium-based alloy plating that contains 2-4% carbon, offering high hardness and excellent wear resistance. Unlike conventional hard chrome plating, it is crack-free and has fewer coating defects like those found in DLC films, resulting in superior corrosion resistance. (The corrosion rate in hydrochloric acid is one-third that of hard chrome plating, and can be reduced to one-sixth with heat treatment.) Compared to DLC films, which begin to degrade at around 300°C and lose adhesion, Cromall maintains stable adhesion and demonstrates good adhesion even at high temperatures. It is also possible to treat inner surfaces where DLC processing is not effective.

Roll/Roller manufacturing, Cota roll, precision roll for μ stage!

Numerous delivery achievements of converting machine rolls! Contributing to high-precision coating.

The coater roll is a roll that plays the role of applying coating liquid to the substrate in reverse coaters such as coating rolls, application rolls, and metering rolls. The thickness of the coating film is adjusted by the rotation speed of the roll and the gap between the rolls, and high precision is required for the roundness, cylindrical shape, and runout during rotation to achieve a thin and uniform coating. Despite their simple appearance, rolls are highly precise industrial components. As the required precision for rolls becomes more advanced, the processing becomes more difficult, and you may have experienced cases where the delivered rolls did not meet the required precision. At Otec, we can manufacture and process high-precision rolls with roundness, cylindrical shape, and runout of less than 3 microns, thanks to our many years of experience. We can also reproduce the ideal surface roughness according to customer requests. We provide inspection reports (runout charts, roughness data) and conduct on-site inspections. Additionally, we can also perform polishing with bearings installed upon request. Please contact us for more details.

Roll/Roller Manufacturing Knife Roll (for Knife Coater)

Manufacturing/repair processing of knife rolls for knife coaters used in coating machines, and precision roll manufacturing for cylindrical and vibration μ tables.

The knife roll serves the role of adjusting the amount of coating liquid applied to the substrate in a knife coater, and precision is required at the edge of the blade. There are various types of knife rolls, including the standard type with edge processing done by milling, the adjustment bolt type with a double structure that allows for fine adjustment of edge height using adjustment bolts, and the insert type with a stellite thermal spray applied to the edge. All of these rolls have a very high level of processing difficulty, but Otec has a proven track record in the production and repair of all types of knife rolls. We have numerous achievements in true roundness, cylindrical shape, and runout of less than 3 microns. We also perform repairs on knife rolls with chipped blade coatings. For more details, please contact us. Since the gap between the back roll and the knife roll sets the coating film thickness, high precision in the back roll is also necessary to achieve high-precision coating, including true roundness, cylindrical shape, and runout. Otec also manufactures back rolls in conjunction with knife rolls.

Hot circulation type with many achievements in multi-layer structures such as double pipes and triple pipes! Preheating and cooling rolls.

It is possible to consistently produce heat transfer circulation rolls, which are essential for film manufacturing and lamination processing lines, from iron core production to surface treatment.

A preheating and cooling roll is a roll that manages the surface temperature by circulating a heat medium such as water or oil inside the roll, serving the purpose of heating or cooling substrates like films and sheets. There are different internal structures, including single-tube type, double-tube type, and triple-tube type. The single-tube type has a hollow interior, and depending on whether the inlet and outlet are the same or different, it uses either a single or double rotary joint. While the single-tube type is cheaper to manufacture due to its simple structure, it has the drawback that as the roll size increases, it requires more heat medium for preheating and cooling, and the heat medium tends to stagnate, leading to uneven surface temperatures. The double-tube and triple-tube types have an internal tube placed inside the outer cylindrical pipe of the roll, allowing the heat medium to flow through the gaps between the pipes. This structure can limit the amount of heat medium to the flow paths, and since the heat medium flows through the gap between the outer and inner tubes, it can efficiently preheat and cool with less variation in surface temperature. If the inlet and outlet are different, it is structured as a double-tube type; if they are the same, it is structured as a triple-tube type.

Surface treatment - hard chrome plating

Also known as industrial chrome plating, it is a representative industrial plating that possesses many excellent mechanical properties such as wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and release properties.

Additionally, because it can be reprocessed, if a product gets scratched, it can be easily repaired by stripping the plating and re-plating. Even if dimensions become smaller due to wear, repairs can be made by adding material through plating. Otec also develops original chrome plating, including "Tef-Lock," a plating that incorporates Teflon for excellent release properties, and "Cloamore," a plating that increases hardness and achieves crack resistance by adding carbon to the chrome plating. At the request of customers, it is also possible to process the surface to a super mirror finish or a matte finish. For more details, please contact us. URL: http://www.otec-kk.co.jp/
