Transport Test: Implementation of ISTA Test

[Transport Test] We will conduct packaging cargo evaluation tests to increase our presence in Southeast Asia and China.

ISTA is one of the international standards widely adopted around the world for the evaluation testing of packaged goods, similar to ISO and ASTM. In recent years, its presence has particularly increased in Southeast Asia and China, with more companies adopting ISTA testing standards as their internal standards. Additionally, the international standard for sterilization packaging in medical devices, ISO11607 (JIS T8041), recommends ISTA testing as one of the options for evaluating packaging performance. Our testing lab was accredited by ISTA in December 2010 and conducts packaging tests tailored to customer needs in accordance with the testing sequences specified by ISTA. ▼ For more details, please download the PDF document (recommended). ▼ For urgent inquiries, please contact us using the 'Contact Us' link below.

ISTA 1A Non-Simulation

[Transport Test] A series of packaging tests will be conducted in accordance with the test sequence specified in ISTA 1A.

Overview: - It applies to individually packaged products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or less. - The ISTA 1A test is not a packaging test that simulates the transport environment. - Users can utilize the ISTA 1A test as a consistent screening test. - The test items consist of fixed displacement vibration and shock tests (drop or tilt or horizontal). In the fixed displacement vibration test, the frequency at which the cargo bounces is explored, and this frequency is applied to the test time calculation formula to determine the vibration time. - In the shock test (drop), a drop height of 760 mm is applied for a total weight of 0 to 10 kg. The drop height is specified according to the total weight of the cargo, but there is no level classification like JIS or ISO. - After conducting the fixed displacement vibration and shock tests consecutively, the box is opened to check for damage. (In the case of ISTA certified tests, the box cannot be opened for inspection during the test.) - The criteria for pass/fail judgment after the test are defined clearly and quantitatively from two perspectives: product damage and external appearance damage of the box, based on inspection items and standards before the test. - Since 2017, a pre-treatment requiring storage in a lab environment for 12 hours has been mandated.

ISTA 1B Non-Simulation

[Transport Test] A series of packaging tests will be conducted in accordance with the test sequence specified in ISTA 1B.

Overview of the ISTA 1B Test: - It applies to individually packaged products weighing over 150 lb (68 kg). The ISTA 1B test is not a packaging test that simulates the transportation environment. Users can utilize the ISTA 1B test as a consistent screening test. - The test items consist of Preconditioning, Fixed Displacement Vibration, and Impact Testing. - In Preconditioning, the test samples are left in the test room environment for 12 hours before testing. - In Fixed Displacement Vibration, the frequency at which the cargo bounces is explored, and this frequency is applied to the test time calculation formula to determine the vibration duration. - In the Impact Test, cargo that can fall from the top surface is dropped from a height on all six sides. For cargo where top surface dropping is not realistic, an inclined impact test or horizontal impact test is conducted, followed by a corner drop test. - In the inclined and horizontal impact tests, impacts are applied to the cargo from four directions. After all tests are conducted consecutively, the box is opened to check for damage. - The pass/fail judgment after testing is defined in a clear and quantitative manner from two perspectives: product damage and external appearance damage of the box, with inspection items and standards clearly outlined.

ISTA 1C Non-Simulation

[Transport Test] We will conduct a series of packaging tests in accordance with the test sequence specified in ISTA 1C.

Overview of the ISTA 1C Test: - It applies to individually packaged products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or less. (An extended test of ISTA 1A) The ISTA 1C test is not a packaging test that simulates transportation environments. - The test items consist of compression tests, vibration tests (either random or fixed displacement), and impact tests. In the compression test, the compression load value is determined using the load calculation formula according to ISTA standards. There are two methods for compression: "Apply and Release (AR)" and "Apply and Hold (AH)." For the vibration test, either fixed displacement vibration or random vibration can be selected. - If fixed displacement vibration is chosen, the frequency at which the cargo bounces is explored, and that frequency is applied to calculate the vibration time. The test is conducted in four directions: bottom, top, sides, and ends. The vibration time for the bottom direction is half of the total test time, while for the other surfaces, it is one-sixth of the total test time. - In the impact test (drop), a total weight of 0 to 10 kg results in a drop of 760 mm. For a total weight of 45 kg to 68 kg, the drop is 200 mm. The drop height is specified according to the total weight of the cargo.

[Transport Test] We will conduct a series of packaging tests in accordance with the test sequence specified in ISTA 1D.

Overview of the ISTA 1D Test: - It applies to individually packaged products weighing over 150 lb (68 kg). (Extended test of ISTA 1B) - The ISTA 1D test is not a simulation of the transportation environment. The test items consist of compression tests, vibration tests, and impact tests (drop or tilt or horizontal). - In the compression test, the compression load value is determined using the load calculation formula according to ISTA standards. There are two methods for compression: "Apply and Release (AR)" and "Apply and Hold (AH)." - In the vibration test, either random vibration or fixed displacement vibration can be selected. - In the impact test, for cargo that can be dropped from the top, it is always dropped from a height of 150 mm regardless of the weight of the cargo. For cargo where top dropping is not realistic, inclined impact or horizontal impact is conducted, followed by edge drop. In the inclined and horizontal impact tests, an impact of 1.7 m per second is applied to the cargo from four directions. - After conducting the compression test, vibration test, and impact test consecutively, the box is opened to check for damage. (In the case of ISTA certified tests, the box cannot be opened for inspection during the test.)

What is packaging? Free presentation of basic knowledge explanation materials.

Classified into individual packaging, internal packaging, and external packaging! It has important functions in the distribution process.

When reflecting on the logistics environment from some time ago, it seems that there was a relatively high volume of transportation of large packaged goods through business-to-business (B to B) transactions. However, with the recent proliferation of the internet leading to transactions between companies and individual consumers (B to C) through online shopping and e-commerce sites, as well as the expansion of transactions between individual consumers (C to C) via flea market apps and auction sites, the logistics environment has undergone significant changes, including a rapid increase in small parcel mixed cargo. In addition to receiving products packaged in cardboard boxes, it is likely that opportunities to package and ship products yourself have also increased. Many of you may have had the experience of carefully protecting and packaging a product to ensure it does not break, and feeling relieved when it arrives safely. *For more detailed information, please refer to the attached PDF document. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.*

What are the factors behind packaging cargo accidents? Free explanatory materials on basic knowledge provided.

In Japan, most of the damage to transported cargo is caused by dynamic stress!

There are not a few cases where damage occurs during the distribution process of packaged goods until they arrive at their destination. Among the damages to transported goods within Japan, a significant portion, accounting for 77%, is caused by dynamic stress believed to result from substantial external forces applied to packaged goods, such as "breakage, bending, denting, and deformation." To reduce the risk of damage to packaging and products during the general distribution process (both domestic and international) and to improve product reliability, it is important to conduct packaging tests in advance to confirm the appropriateness of packaging specifications and the strength of the products themselves. *For detailed information, please refer to the attached PDF document. For more information, feel free to contact us.*

What is packaging testing? Free presentation of basic knowledge explanation materials.

It is used in many industries because it can evaluate the strength and durability of packaging necessary to protect products during transportation!

Packaging testing refers to the evaluation of the durability of products and packaged goods against physical impacts such as drop shocks, vibrations, and compression from stacking, as well as changes in temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure during the distribution process (transportation). It is conducted to verify product quality in advance and to prevent damage during actual transportation. Since it can assess the strength and durability of packaging necessary to protect products during transport, it is used in many industries. Packaging testing comprehensively applies transportation load stresses such as "drop shocks," "vibrations," and "compression" that are encountered in the series of transport environments from shipment to delivery, in order to confirm the appropriateness of packaging specifications and the protective nature of the products. It is generally conducted in accordance with official packaging testing standards. *For detailed information, please refer to the attached PDF document.
