Practical Examples of Problem Solving with Kakihara's Resin Coating

Challenge to create a variety of new features! Consistent production from mold to assembly.

Kakihara Industrial Co., Ltd. is advancing multifaceted research and development, including the realization of chrome-free processes, evaluation of new materials for plating, and joint development with chemical manufacturers, while pursuing the possibilities of metalizing. The results are implemented as a consistent production system, achieving high functionality and added value in the production of parts across various fields. In this case study collection, you can see examples where having an integrated production system (molds, molding, plating treatment) allowed us to consider and implement total solutions for challenges such as "wanting to improve resistance to thermal cycling as a crack countermeasure," as well as cases where we proposed plating colors with unique aluminum expressions. [Contents (excerpt)] ■ Case 1: Improvement of thermal cycling resistance for uneven thickness resin plating products ■ Case 2: Expression of a polished aluminum-like texture through resin plating ■ Case 3: Trivalent chrome plating resistant to de-icing salt in cold regions ■ Case 4: Noise prevention using two-color molded plating products *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Silvest Chrome Plating - Design × Environmental Compatibility Trivalent Chrome Plating -

New Development! "Silvest Chrome Plating" - Environmentally Friendly Trivalent Chrome Plating with Color Tone Similar to Hexavalent Chrome Plating.

Until now, hexavalent chromium has been considered an indispensable substance in resin plating manufacturing, but due to its toxicity, it is predicted that it will no longer be usable in the plating process in the future. Kakihara Industries has been mass-producing trivalent chromium plating for over 20 years, with the aim of enhancing dark and luxurious design aesthetics. Recently, as the use of hexavalent chromium is being restricted from an environmental impact reduction perspective, there has been an increasing demand to use trivalent chromium plating not for design enhancement but for environmental compliance. The silver-toned trivalent chromium plating that our company has traditionally offered is widely used in extremely cold regions due to its excellent resistance to de-icing salt corrosion, but it has been characterized by a slightly yellow-black hue. Anticipating that environmentally friendly plating that can express a color tone similar to the bluish-silver of hexavalent chromium plating will be required in the future, we have developed "Silvest Chrome Plating," a trivalent chromium plating that can express blue tones and high brightness. *For details on color tones, please refer to the downloadable materials below.

Completely hexavalent chromium-free resin plating

Introducing our "completely hexavalent chromium-free resin plating process"!

Our company has been developing a resin plating process that does not use hexavalent chromium in all plating processes. By combining the "Hexavalent Chromium-Free Etching Process" and the "Trivalent Chromium Plating Process," it is possible to completely eliminate hexavalent chromium from the resin plating process. The "Hexavalent Chromium-Free Etching Process" is in a completed development state, but expanding it to mass production lines is our future mission. We aim to anticipate the needs of our customers and society and realize this as soon as possible. 【Features】 ■ Does not use hexavalent chromium, a highly concerning substance ■ Has adhesion comparable to the conventional etching process using hexavalent chromium (clears peeling strength of 9.8N/cm) ■ Can repurpose existing equipment, minimizing cost increases and maintaining mass production capabilities equivalent to the conventional process *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

[Case Study] Improvement of Cold and Heat Repetition Resistance of Resin-Plated Products with a Bias Toward Meat

Due to having a consistent production system (molds, molding, plating processing), it is possible to consider and implement total solutions.

We would like to introduce a case where we solved the issue by improving the cold and heat cycle resistance of thick-walled resin plating products. The problem was that decorative chrome plating was applied to PC+ABS, but the coefficients of thermal expansion of the metals that make up the decorative chrome plating—copper, nickel, and chromium—are significantly smaller compared to PC+ABS. As a result, the plating film could not withstand the stress when temperature was applied, leading to the occurrence of cracks. We proposed improving the shape of the stress concentration points. As a result, the cold and heat cycle resistance was enhanced, allowing us to mass-produce and deliver high-quality products, thereby ensuring safety in the market and gaining trust from our customers. [Case Overview (Partial)] ■ Issues - Decorative chrome plating of thick-walled resin parts, which are touched by hand in automotive components, was being mass-produced by another company, but cracks appeared in the plating in the market, necessitating countermeasures. - We wanted to improve cold and heat cycle resistance as a countermeasure against cracks. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

[Example of Problem Solving] Expressing a texture similar to polished aluminum through resin plating.

Stable use of new plating chemicals in mass production! Our company's plating process development capabilities and equipment development capabilities.

At that time, European flagship cars were beginning to adopt a beautiful appearance resembling machined aluminum, and we would like to introduce a case where this issue was resolved with resin plating. At that time, there were only completely matte platings available in Japan that did not reflect images, and there was no company with a proven track record of mass production using those chemicals. Therefore, at our new process development department, we were researching this chemical and developing a unique plating expression by combining it with other processes. We proposed a plating color with a distinctive aluminum appearance. A resin-plated product with a unique luster specific to the manufacturer was adopted, contributing to the enhancement of the interior quality of the automobile. [Issue] ■ A beautiful appearance resembling machined aluminum has a slightly diminished gloss (a gloss that reflects images to a slight extent), but at that time, the only matte plating available in Japan was completely devoid of gloss and did not reflect images. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

The Mechanism of Plating: Shapes Unsuitable for Plating and the Reasons Behind It

Explaining how plating is influenced by product shape, including shapes it excels at and shapes it struggles with.

"I think plating won't adhere to this shape." During meetings with customers, I have had to convey this line several times, feeling quite uneasy about it. Among those reading this column now, there may be some who have had similar experiences of being told the same thing by a plating manufacturer. In this column, I would like to explain from the perspective of a plating manufacturer, "Why doesn't plating adhere?" *For detailed content of the column, you can view it through the related links. The mechanism of satin plating and how its luster fades.

By combining the color of satin nickel with the chrome plating on the surface, it is possible to express various patterns in appearance.

When we think of general plating, we often imagine a shiny metal surface, but recently, we have also seen many examples of matte plating. What exactly is this matte plating? Decorative chrome plating, used for embellishment, was originally applied to adorn dull metal appearances with brilliance. Moreover, the base for decoration is not limited to metal; in recent years, plating on resin surfaces has also become quite common. This decorative chrome plating allows for a smooth deposition on the surface, resulting in a very beautiful glossy finish. *For more detailed information, you can view the related links. The Mechanism of Plating: 'Resin Plating' Does Not Peel! What is the Reason?

Why do resin and metal, which should not normally adhere, actually bond? A professional in 'resin plating' will explain.

When it comes to "plating," the well-known types are "zinc plating" that prevents metal from rusting and "gold plating" used for decorative items. However, what I will explain this time is "resin plating." As the name suggests, it is a special plating technique that creates a metallic coating on resin (plastic), giving it a metallic appearance. Invented in the United States in 1962, it is widely used in everyday items such as automobiles, home appliances, agricultural tools, construction machinery, and plumbing fixtures. You might have the impression that different materials like resin (plastic) and metal would easily peel off. However, "resin plating" does not peel off. This is because the resin (plastic) and the metal film are strongly bonded together. The reasons for this will be introduced by professionals in "resin plating." *For more details on the column, you can view it through the related links. For more information, please feel free to download the PDF or contact us.
