This report introduces the "quenching samples" produced with the laser processing machine LBM10, which was exhibited at "JIMTOF2014W" held at Tokyo Big Sight recently. For the quenching samples, we selected "S50C," which is commonly used for quenching. The report also includes suitable processing conditions for production. ALFING GmbH in Germany has long been a leading manufacturer in the market for production equipment for connecting rods. Many manufacturing technologies, such as cracked connecting rods, were first mass-produced using ALFING machines. This technology is also applied to other components, such as crankshaft bearing caps or disc cams. **Features** Cracking of Connecting Rods A fracture initiation surface is created on the inner surface of the large end of the integrally formed connecting rod using laser light or machining, and it fractures under impact load. During reassembly, the fracture surfaces are aligned and tightened. Since shear loads are borne across the entire large fracture surface, the strength is significantly increased compared to the conventional reamer bolt method. Moreover, the need for high-precision finishing of bolt holes is eliminated, allowing the process to be consolidated to less than two-thirds, achieving significant cost reductions. Cracking of Bearing Caps Five bearing caps, integrally cast as a whole block, are simultaneously fractured. The cracking process is similar to that of connecting rods, resulting in significant strength improvements and cost reductions.

This time, we will introduce a case of processing a material that has undergone special surface treatment on pure aluminum (A1100). One side of the pure aluminum, which is a highly reflective material, has been treated with PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), raising concerns about adverse effects from back reflection during laser processing of blank cuts. In the bending process, we prevented scratches by processing while keeping the protective tape on. Although it was a challenging task due to the conditions of bending a thin aluminum sheet (t0.5) with protective tape, which makes it difficult to achieve the desired bending angle, we were able to handle it without any issues.
