Product Adoption Case No. 2 [Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology] Small Valve and Pump

Contributed to the miniaturization and energy efficiency of the "Carbon Dioxide Observation Buoy" by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).

The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has been using ships to observe the concentration of carbon dioxide in the ocean in order to more accurately grasp the distribution of carbon dioxide absorption and release on a global scale. However, feeling the limitations of traditional methods, they developed a "carbon dioxide observation buoy" that observes while drifting on the ocean surface. Our products were incorporated into the core flow cell part of this buoy. Traditional devices required several gas cylinders, and the overall size of the equipment was approximately 1900mm in height, 1200mm in width, and 600mm in depth, making it large, heavy, and expensive. The newly developed device is called the "carbon dioxide observation buoy." By exchanging carbon dioxide with the surrounding seawater through a gas permeable membrane, the pH of the pH indicator solution changes as carbon dioxide enters and exits, resulting in a change in the color of the solution. By using a micro pump to supply the pH indicator solution, a valve for replacement, and a flow cell for measurement, and by manifoldizing the flow paths connecting these components, we contributed to miniaturizing the interior of the buoy, reducing its size to a diameter of 260mm and a total length of 600mm. The completed measurement device successfully conducted a year-long drifting observation in the Southern Ocean.

Product Adoption Case No. 3 [NASA] - Compact and Lightweight Pump

Our compact and lightweight pump has been adopted for the NASA's device for analyzing monolayer liquid crystal formation and defect generation mechanisms in a microgravity environment.

In order to realize a liquid crystal display that can be used in outer space, as part of the "Oasis" project, which was experimented on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2015, research was conducted on the formation of single-layer liquid crystals and the mechanisms of defect occurrence in a microgravity environment that is difficult to replicate on Earth. Our company's compact and lightweight pumps (syringe-type and tube-type) were installed in the experimental apparatus. [Challenges and Solutions] In 2008, NASA contacted our company because they were looking for pumps that were as small and lightweight as possible, given the need to transport them to the International Space Station (ISS) via rocket and the limited experimental space within the station. After undergoing various long-term verifications, including ground experiments and microgravity experiments using aircraft, the specifications of the pumps within the apparatus were adjusted, leading to a successful launch and experiment. Equipment used for space experiments requires thorough miniaturization and lightweight design to reduce launch costs. Of course, quality and precision cannot be compromised. We received high praise for our ability to flexibly respond to numerous verification results while continuously providing high-quality products.

Product Adoption Case No. 5 [Techshot Inc.] Small Pump

Our small pump has been adopted as a key component in the experimental equipment of Techshot, which is mounted on the International Space Station (ISS).

Techshot is a company that designs, develops, and sells unique experimental equipment for use in space. The experimental module with a built-in pump was first launched to the ISS during the SpaceX mission CRS-20 in early March 2020. **Challenges and Solutions** The MVP Cell-03 mission is a study aimed at verifying the increased growth rate of cardiac cells placed in microgravity. During the experiment, the cardiac cells grew in a specially designed cell culture experimental module made by Techshot. One of the challenges Techshot faced in developing the microgravity experimental device was miniaturization. The RP-Q series is a pump small enough to fit on a fingertip, yet it provides the 3 mL/min required by Techshot, outperforming similar-sized products from other manufacturers. Additionally, using a simple structure with fewer sealing points in the tube pump helps reduce the potential for leaks. Founded over 30 years ago, Techshot is one of the world's leading commercial space companies. We are pleased that Takasago Electric Industrial's small pumps can contribute to scientific advancement alongside Techshot.

Product Adoption Case No. 8: Cell Transplantation Using a Pen-Type Syringe Pump

Our pen-type syringe pump has been adopted for research on regenerating kidneys produced within animal fetuses at Tokyo Jikei University School of Medicine.

Dr. Shuichiro Yamanaka from Tokyo Medical University is conducting research on kidney regeneration as a new treatment for renal failure. To regenerate a functional kidney, he creates "Kidney Seeds." In previous studies, he successfully transplanted Kidney Seeds into renal failure rats, resulting in urine production (Yokote S, PANS, 2015; Fujimoto T, Cell Reports, 2020). **Challenges and Solutions** To create Kidney Seeds, stem cells must be transplanted into small kidneys during the embryonic stage. The electric injector using the pen-type syringe pump SBP from Takasago Electric Industry assists in this transplantation. Recent research demonstrated kidney regeneration from organ-deficient animals by transplanting kidney-specific stem cells called renal progenitor cells into mice that cannot develop kidneys using the electric injector, although the kidneys were immature (Yamanaka S, JASN, 2019). In the future, the aim is to create regenerated kidneys within large animals such as pigs and utilize those kidneys for the treatment of patients with renal failure.

Controlling high-pressure fluids for flowing high-viscosity fluids! Customization examples of valve pumps.

**Case 1** We received an inquiry from a customer developing tablet manufacturing equipment in Asia, who wanted to repeatedly discharge a high-viscosity fluid at a targeted timing. In response, we customized based on our quantitative dispensing pumps, the MLP series and PKP series. By optimizing the power balance between the spring and actuator, we were able to discharge the high-viscosity fluid (150cps) that the customer desired. We achieved a discharge pressure 1.5 times higher than conventional standards according to our inspection criteria, and received very high praise for the prototype. **Case 2** We received an inquiry from a customer in the analysis industry in the Czech Republic, who was looking for a valve that could handle corrosive solutions at high pressure for a waste analysis device. In response, we optimized the diaphragm shape, spring, and actuator based on our diaphragm valve MTV series, making it capable of withstanding high pressure. Additionally, to allow for the flow of corrosive solutions, we adopted non-metallic materials for the wetted parts.

Leveraging a broad expertise in engineering and scientific consulting, it offers comprehensive guidance to partners throughout the entire process of designing, integrating, and operating experiments in space. **Challenges and Solutions** During the preparation for SpaceX's CRS-25 mission, Space Tango faced specific requirements such as biocompatibility, sterility, and the need for pumps and valves that fit within limited space. Additionally, the pumps required for this specialized payload needed to provide a consistent and accurate flow rate of 125 +/- 25 uL/min. Fortunately, Space Tango found the SBP series syringe pumps, which met all of these stringent criteria. For other payloads, they utilized the RP-Q series tube pumps. The selection was driven by the pumps' compact size, reliability, and high levels of biocompatibility and sterility. Takasago Electric aims to continue contributing to cutting-edge research in space through Space Tango in the future.
