At Shiba EMU, we are responding to RoHS2 based on green procurement. Originally, brass materials were allowed to contain a certain amount of lead as they were exempted from the RoHS2 directive. However, discussions regarding the extension of this exemption have been ongoing since the end of last year, and depending on the outcome, it is said that the maximum allowable lead content in brass may soon be set at 0.1 wt% (1000 ppm). Therefore, since around July 2020, our company has been selecting lead-free materials and confirming their machinability and conducting prototypes. I requested the machining of precision holes, but the shaft doesn't fit into the hole! Moreover, even if it does fit, it ends up being loose! I believe many people have similar concerns. For example, in the case of a hole with a diameter of φ20 and a fit with H7 for the hole and h7 for the shaft, the specifications would be φ20H7 (0 to +0.021) and φ20h7 (0 to -0.021). Here, if the dimensions of the manufactured item are a hole of φ20.00 and a shaft of φ20.00, they fall within the dimensional tolerances, so they are not defective but rather good products. However, in practice, when trying to assemble them, the dimensions may be too tight or the items may not fit at all. Therefore, our company aims to machine precision holes to be right in the middle (for the above example, this would mean targeting H7 at φ20.011 and h7 at φ19.989). Additionally, we conduct inspections using measurements with micro gauges, pin gauges, and air micrometers.
