[University/Department of Architecture/Case Study] Utilizing Laser Technology in the Production of Architectural Models

Students use for 'making parts for architectural model production'! Case study of laser processing machine introduction.

In April 2022, Otemon Gakuin University established a new major in the Faculty of Literature called "Aesthetics and Architectural Culture," utilizing the Trotec laser cutting machine "Speedy 400" for the production of architectural models. Laser cutting is primarily used for model materials such as wood and paper, and a key advantage is the ability to cut multiple small accessories (miniature-sized people, plants, furniture, etc. that accompany the model) at once. Additionally, the laser software "Ruby" is standardly equipped, allowing for direct import of graphic data, which enables speedy processing of parts. By simply converting hand-drawn images to PDF and importing them, laser processing can be easily done, resulting in immediate shapes. ■Multicolored wavelengths■Capable of driving two wavelengths simultaneously■LAN, RS-232C, and USB connections available (optional) This device consists of a head that incorporates a semiconductor laser diode (LD) and a power supply and controller for driving the head, achieving a rapid and stable semiconductor laser diode light source. It supports APC control (constant optical output mode) using a photodiode built into the LD package, external APC control (using an external photodiode, etc.) when no photodiode is present, and ACC control (constant drive current mode). It comes standard with a temperature control function for the LD using a Peltier element, and it can display the current temperature of the LD. External analog modulation is possible from 10 kHz to 1 GHz. This device is equipped with a GPIB interface as standard. It has a forced OFF (interlock) function for the LD via an external switch. As protection features for the LD, it includes drive current limitation, a shutdown function when optical output exceeds the rated value, slope control to suppress rapid changes to prevent overshoot when changing optical output, and a function to turn off the LD when the temperature is outside the set range during the transient period of temperature control.

Technical Introduction: Rolling Process

Thread rolling is a process in which a screw blank is sandwiched between a set of dies, and while rotating the screw blank through the movement or rotation of the dies, plastic deformation is performed to transfer the thread profile of the dies onto the material. This method of processing significantly improves the surface roughness as the workpiece surface is compressed by the ground dies. Unlike cutting processes, the fibrous metal structure is not severed. Additionally, the surface composition is affected by plastic deformation, allowing the processed product to achieve high strength. Furthermore, due to net shape forming, there is less noise, and the processing oil is less likely to become contaminated, resulting in less waste oil. Unlike cutting processes that remove material, there is no extra waste produced, making this an environmentally friendly processing method.
