Free membership registrationThis book is envisioned as a "business resource collection" that broadly addresses the business needs and supply (demand and supply) aspects related to x/z EVs and lithium-ion batteries, while considering recent trends. It is not intended for the author to present conclusions or provide direction. The goal is to gather the most recent data in numerical form as much as possible, organize it chronologically, and provide it as a reference for the readers' action plans. In the first half, the focus is on BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs, organizing and presenting the different contents of x/z EVs by country. A list of the goals for the abolition of ICEs by 2030 or 2035 is provided according to these classifications. Next, the manufacturing and sales performance by country and region is summarized based on the most recent 12 months of numerical data available. The significant gap between these figures and the final targets appears to be a barrier that will hinder progress moving forward. The challenge of addressing this gap varies widely depending on the country and automobile manufacturers, leading to many competitive and collaborative relationships emerging. The major BEV models from various companies have moved beyond the development stage and are now entering a phase of performance improvement and the development of uniqueness. The driving performance of major models from the 2022-23 period is compared, and various issues related to charging systems and safety are addressed.

Free membership registrationAs the trend towards decarbonization accelerates globally, hydrogen is gaining attention. In the short term, the utilization of blue hydrogen (fossil fuels + CCS) is expected, but in the long term, green hydrogen (derived from renewable energy) will also be required. Green hydrogen is primarily produced through Power to Gas, which needs to be understood in the context of the integration of renewable energy into the grid. In terms of hydrogen utilization, there are options beyond direct use of hydrogen, such as converting hydrogen into synthetic fuels. If synthetic fuels require CO2, this is also related to CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilization) and carbon recycling. In pursuit of carbon neutrality, this paper will introduce domestic and international trends regarding Power to Gas, synthetic fuels, and CCU, while exploring the potential and challenges of these technologies.

Free membership registrationWind power generation, unlike solar power generation, is an accumulation of manufacturing consisting of 20,000 parts such as wind turbines, bearings, gearboxes, and generators, with Japanese companies having strengths in materials and components, including carbon fiber used in wind turbines. However, the world's largest wind power generation country has shifted from the United States to China, which is focusing on nurturing domestic manufacturers. The rise of Chinese and Indian companies, along with the strengthening of offshore wind power projects by leading Western companies, has intensified competition in terms of improving generation efficiency and pricing in wind power. In Japan, some companies are withdrawing from the wind power business, and development has not progressed as expected due to regulations on time-consuming environmental assessments, site constraints, limitations on transmission system capacity, and fishing rights. However, following the Tokyo Olympics, there are high expectations for the growth of Japan's wind power market, which exceeds 1 trillion yen annually, as a key area of infrastructure strategy. This will provide a clear explanation of how onshore and offshore wind power will grow in Japan and globally, and the potential future business opportunities for Japanese companies.

Free membership registrationThis presentation is organized in a lecture format based on the main topics of the book "Supply Chain SC for EV Batteries and Battery Materials," which is scheduled to be published by S&T Publishing in early 2022. The research and drafting of this book have been underway since around the fall of 2021, but issues related to EVs, EV batteries, and the supply chain SC of their raw materials have emerged as significant challenges. Recent information highlights a major news item from Toyota Motor Corporation's announcement on December 14, regarding 3.5 million EVs by 2030. The batteries required for this will involve a new investment of 2 trillion yen, totaling 280 GWh. Not only Toyota, but Volkswagen has also announced plans to produce 240 GWh in-house. In this presentation, I would like to focus on the first part regarding the number of EVs by 2030/35 and the second part concerning battery production expansion plans. I will estimate the supply chain of battery components, including positive and negative electrode materials, as numerically as possible, and consider examples of mineral development for nickel and cobalt. Additionally, the selection of materials such as positive and negative electrodes seems to have shifted from a focus on cost reduction for batteries to a different trend. Furthermore, I would like to touch on the emergence of the materials market for new all-solid-state batteries.

Free membership registrationRetort pouch products continue to see an increase in distribution volume in response to longer at-home time. In the Japanese market, they are regaining steady growth amid the current COVID-19 pandemic. It is estimated that at least until 2023, a growth rate of 2-3% per year is possible. In the case of the Japanese market, looking at the overwhelmingly central "retort pouch food," the growth rate of "transparent barrier film structured retort pouches" continues to progress. Additionally, in South Korea, pouch exports to countries like India are becoming more active beyond domestic demand. In Thailand, necessary quantities are supplemented through pouch imports, and by combining these, it serves as a "export base for retort pouch food (final products) to the world." In North America, the trend for retort sterilization has been "canned goods → rigid containers," but in recent years, pouch types have been reevaluated and continue to increase, particularly with a high proportion in baby food applications. In the European market, as a trial for achieving environmentally friendly pouches, "monomaterial pouches in pet food" have come to the forefront.

Free membership registrationRolling bearings are sometimes referred to as the "rice of machines," analogous to the Japanese diet, and they are essential mechanical components in constructing mechanical systems. In mechanical design, selecting rolling bearings according to the specifications of the machinery is part of the job, but failing to understand the fundamental principles can lead to significant mistakes. Recently, as the control of motor rotation speed using inverters has become widespread, electrical corrosion has also been observed in household appliances. Electrical corrosion is not a form of mechanical damage. Moreover, the design of rolling bearings should not allow electricity to flow internally, so when electrical corrosion occurs, the cause is often unclear. This seminar will explain the conditions under which electrical corrosion occurs, the observation of the ridge mark growth process, and methods to prevent electrical corrosion. A seminar specifically focused on electrical corrosion in rolling bearings is rare, and I hope to make it a meaningful experience for all participants.

Free membership registrationSemiconductors and liquid crystal devices are manufactured by repeating the lithography process multiple times. During these dozens of repetitions, the need for cutting-edge fine patterns is limited to a few processes, such as the gate process, while the majority uses thicker line width patterns. Novolak resist is used for these thick patterns. Of course, depending on the device, chemical amplification resist for KrF (248 nm) may also be used here. Therefore, in semiconductor devices, while not all processes use thick line widths, novolak resist is still used, and in considerable amounts. Additionally, in emerging countries like China, semiconductor device manufacturing involves producing older generation devices, where novolak resist is naturally used. Furthermore, in liquid crystal manufacturing, novolak resist is used in all processes (5 processes). There seem to be device manufacturers that use 4 processes due to the use of halftone masks. The introduction of chemical amplification resist, which is high sensitivity and high resolution, is also being considered, but practical application has not been achieved due to the significantly larger substrate sizes compared to semiconductors and the difficulty in controlling the usage environment.

Free membership registration○Publication Date: January 10, 2020 ○Format: A5, 147 pages ○Price: 4,200 yen (excluding tax) → STbook member price: 3,990 yen (excluding tax) ○Author: Hiroshi Takiyama, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology ○Purpose: Crystals can be relatively easily precipitated, but when trying to optimize crystal quality, such as purity and particle size distribution, it takes time to set operational conditions. Additionally, slight differences in operational methods can significantly impact crystal quality. Therefore, while crystals may be successfully precipitated in lab experiments, crystallization can become problematic in actual processes, leading to the perception that crystallization operations are difficult. The revised edition includes new chapters that explain the control of polymorphic crystallization, which is often problematic in crystallization practices, as well as the continuous flow production of crystal particle groups and methods for producing co-crystals as new crystalline materials. This textbook is designed for corporate researchers who have specialized in organic synthesis and are about to start crystallization, as well as students studying crystallization at universities, helping them understand crystallization operations and enhance the quality of crystal production.

Free membership registrationThe recent boom in autonomous driving can be said to be supported by the performance of Velodyne's LiDAR. Velodyne developed LiDAR at the request of a team from Stanford University to win an autonomous driving contest organized by the U.S. Department of Defense. After winning the Urban Challenge, the Stanford team moved to Google, where they established the de facto standard for current autonomous driving systems. In Japan, demonstrations of autonomous driving have also begun, with LiDAR playing a significant role. However, since there are no Japanese-made LiDAR systems, the ones being used are from Velodyne. Therefore, I conceived this book project to contribute to the development of LiDAR, which will be a key technology for autonomous driving in Japan. This book has been written by leading researchers and engineers in the field of LiDAR, covering everything from basic principles to applications. While it does not cover everything about LiDAR due to its emphasis on timeliness, it is believed that most of the major topics have been introduced. I hope this book will be of some reference to researchers and engineers involved with LiDAR.

Free membership registrationIt is said that we humans obtain about 80% of the information from the outside world through vision. Furthermore, we acquire three-dimensional information about the external world based on the visual information received from our left and right eyes. Therefore, it can be said that the optimal means of information presentation for humans is through three-dimensional images. This book compiles content related to the display technology of such three-dimensional images and the user interface technology that utilizes them into one volume. I am confident that this book gathers the best wisdom related to three-dimensional images in present-day Japan. While this book serves as a snapshot of current three-dimensional image technology, I hope it provides hints for solving these challenges.

Free membership registrationThis book explains the overview of technologies and development trends regarding antennas and high-frequency circuits, which are important component parts. It summarizes the development trends of automotive millimeter-wave radar and millimeter-wave communication as representative applications of millimeter-wave technology, and also introduces millimeter-wave imaging, which is a future sensing technology. Furthermore, to reduce the cost of millimeter-wave systems, high-frequency substrates are used for antennas and high-frequency circuits, as they are crucial technologies that influence the performance and cost of millimeter-wave systems. Examples of high-frequency substrate development are also presented. High-frequency substrates are being developed by various companies, and advancements in performance are being pursued with keywords such as low loss, low cost, multilayering, and stable characteristics, making it a field to watch in the future. Additionally, to maintain stable system performance, it is necessary to avoid interference issues that constantly arise in radio wave systems, and the design of radio wave absorbers specific to the millimeter-wave frequency band is discussed. In the millimeter-wave band, the properties of these materials differ from those at low frequencies, making accurate information on the electrical constants of materials extremely important for the design of antennas and high-frequency circuits. Finally, the book discusses the measurement techniques for the electrical constants of materials, antennas, and radar systems in the millimeter-wave band.

Free membership registrationThe year 2017 marks 40 years since the mass production of semiconductors began. This stems from GCA's launch of the stepper (g-line NA0.28) in 1977, which transitioned from contact and proximity exposure to reduction projection exposure methods. The advent of the stepper significantly advanced the miniaturization of pattern dimensions and the mass production capabilities of semiconductors. Indeed, 1977 can be considered the starting point of a leap in lithography technology. Therefore, I believe it is meaningful to publish a book reflecting on the 40-year history of lithography technology and contemplating its future prospects at this time. Additionally, many renowned researchers who witnessed the dawn of lithography technology are now of retirement age, and valuable experiences and materials are at risk of being lost. Thus, we invited pioneering experts to discuss the various turning points in lithography technology, how they overcame challenges, the history of material development, and stories of the difficulties faced in those times. I believe that this work not only reflects on history but also inspires young researchers to dream about their research.
