■Why does iron accumulate in the boiler? Raw water, such as well water or industrial water, often contains dissolved iron, with varying concentrations depending on the water source. Iron that oxidizes when exposed to air settles at the bottom of the water supply tank as reddish-brown rust, and is gradually transported to the boiler each time water is supplied, accumulating on the heat transfer surfaces and the inside of the pipes. It is not uncommon to find significant accumulation by the time one feels that "efficiency seems to have dropped." ■How do you identify the cause?
