In front of and behind the flue gas desulfurization device and cooling tower, rapid cooling of exhaust gases, sulfuric acid mist, unvaporized droplets, and low pH drains can overlap, leading to localized severe corrosion. The state of the liquid adhering to the wall cannot be determined by gas temperature alone, and the corrosion environment can vary significantly depending on the location within the equipment. For the casing and duct of the cooling tower, as well as the exhaust stack and afterburner duct of the flue gas desulfurization device, S-TEN1 and S-TEN2 are considered as candidates. Please check for degradation of the spray nozzles, mist intrusion, pH and retention of the drain, and the flow of cleaning water. Since the corrosion rate of S-TEN may increase sharply under conditions where cleaning water continuously flows over the wall and becomes low pH liquid, comparisons will include stainless steel and linings.

In dry-type dust collectors and air preheaters, the casing and ducts become cooler than the exhaust gases, leading to repeated temperature changes that cross the acid dew point. S-TEN1 thick plates are designed to meet the mechanical properties of SM400A, but if JIS compliance is to be noted on the mill sheet for applications related to public works or building codes, prior specification before ordering is necessary. Dedicated welding materials, vertical and circumferential joints, drains, insulation, and inspection openings will be considered as a whole.

In the hydrochloric acid pickling tank of the plating and steel processing line, the tank body is corroded by hydrochloric acid solution, steam, and splashes. While resin lining offers high corrosion resistance, issues can arise with scratches from incoming materials and fixtures, repairs, and sorting during disposal. We propose S-TEN1 as an option to reconsider from the perspective of the base material of the steel tank. S-TEN1, which is resistant to hydrochloric acid dew point corrosion, is used in the tank body of hydrochloric acid pickling tanks in applications by Nippon Steel. Cutting, bending, and welding can be handled with the concept equivalent to SM400A, and by using dedicated welding materials, the welded areas can also achieve corrosion resistance equivalent to the base material. However, S-TEN1 is not universally applicable to all concentrations and temperatures of hydrochloric acid. Selection should be made by confirming the liquid composition, temperature, flow rate, and whether it is immersion, steam, or splash.

In smoke ducts and flues of thermal power plants and waste incineration facilities, SO3, HCl, and water vapor in the exhaust gas condense on the surface of steel plates, leading to sulfuric and hydrochloric acid dew point corrosion. Equipment that lowers exhaust gas temperature through heat recovery or rapid cooling, as well as bends, lower sections, and low-temperature areas during shutdown that are cooled by outside air, are prone to thinning of ordinary steel. Repeated heating and cooling can cause alternating compressive and tensile stresses, which may result in thermal fatigue cracks. The linear expansion coefficient of ordinary steel is approximately 11.4×10^-6/℃, while that of SUS304 is about 16.4×10^-6/℃, resulting in different amounts of expansion even under the same temperature difference. Additionally, the linear expansion coefficient changes with temperature. It is essential to verify not only the material changes but also the temperature distribution, member lengths, restraint conditions, support methods, expansion allowances, and dissimilar material joints, and to collaborate with designers to consider materials and processing methods.

In liners, chutes, and screens where hot materials or products come into contact, in addition to wear, the reduction in hardness and strength due to high temperatures becomes a problem. Even steel plates that excel in wear resistance at room temperature may soften if the operating temperature rises, so it is not always possible to simply select standard wear-resistant steel. Generally, standard wear-resistant steel is often assumed to be used below 300°C, and specialized grades that suppress softening are candidates for temperatures around 300 to 450°C. However, the required performance varies depending on the mode of wear, impact, temperature distribution, and holding time. Areas prioritizing wear resistance are separated from support structures prioritizing high-temperature strength, allowing for the selective use of wear-resistant steel, alloy steel, and heat-resistant steel.

When steel continues to be subjected to stress at high temperatures exceeding approximately 450°C, "creep" becomes a problem, where deformation progresses over time even under stresses lower than the yield strength. During long-term operation, issues such as graphitization, carbide growth, oxidation, and reduction in toughness may also occur, and there may be cases where the material does not return to its original performance after cooling. At temperatures around 450 to 650°C, materials with creep strength and allowable stress corresponding to the operating temperature and stress are required.
